Free to play MMOs

Runes of Magic is good, popular and free to play with a cash shop, although it's not necessary to use it to enjoy the game :)

I played PW a while ago and its okish, looks really nice, typical Korean grind fest mind and you will get tempted to buy items from the cash shop......

Faldon

Not really massive, I mean the world is quite big but the usual number of players is less than 30.

Fight, collect, make, party up and hit difficult monsters... lots you can do.

You can get to know dam near everyone that plays and every now and again the game moderators put on events where everyone in the world comes to a big free for all fight or a massive player party vs spawned mobs thing.

If you pay you get "citizenship" which lets you rent buildings on the map as spawnpoints and guildhouses, more bank space (unlimited?) and free in-game mailing of items and messages to others/yourself. Also get to wear certain rare items and have no limits on how many skills you can train.

Couple of hundred MB client + patches.

Dungeons and Dragons is popular, LoTRO goes free to play in September [i think] and i think MU Online is still free to play and that was a decent MMO.

it depends what you mean by free to play, do you mean small client and web based that are free to play?

Or bigger MMO's like DDO and Lotro that use the F2P system?

Yeah by the end of this year Turbine could really have the F2P market by the neck with DDO and LOTRO. Those 2 MMOs are both high quality and will somewhat raise the bar in terms of whats expected for f2p MMOs imo.

Gave SUN a go last night, quite a nicely polished MMO. It's 5 years old, so not surprising I guess. Well mapped quests and so on, I'm also liking the skill system. :) Only played as a glass cannon elementalist so far, up to level 13 inside an hour (!) but groups seem to love glass cannons in SUN :p

Will give Perfect World a go tonight. :)

Technically Eve is free to play if you pay via PLEX (around 300mil/month).

It's hard to achieve that from scratch on the 14 day trial (or the 21 day buddy trial) but you should only need to shell out for one gametime card (giving you 74 or 81 days total) in order to set yourself up to pay for your account via PLEX from then onwards.

Other than that D&DO and LOTRO are probably worth looking at, but if it was me I'd be heading to Eve or looking at unofficial free servers of paid MMO's.

martial empires is free and in beta stages.

also as said before perfect world is alright (although im not much of an RPG fan)

Last time I played it the combat controls pretty much sucked and the movement controls oh my word felt like driving Lmao.
How is it nowadays?

The movement controls leave something to be desired I suppose. Though I'm used to them as they are the same as DAoC were (though I am yet to find out how to remap some keys) but you can also click-and-go like in the older MMOs (i.e. you char will go to where ever you click)

I played EVE for nearly 4 years and finally got bored of playing the glorified spreadsheet :p

I haven't played in ages. How many Lvl 4 missions would you need to run to generate that sort of cash in a month?

I have a Domi that I use for running Lvl 4s and salvaging as I go.
