Saw this on the news this morning, and just found an article about it on the Independent website, thought it was pretty interesting that something this size exists, and theres probably even bigger out there!

The biggest star found, R136a1 within the R136a cluster, has a current mass of 265 solar masses, and it is thought its birthweight was as much as 320 times that of the Sun.

It is also the most luminous star ever found, close to 10 million times that of the Sun.

Sorry but what??

There are stars out there that have a solar radius 2100 times greater than our sun..

Like so.....

More impressive to me.

There is a difference between mass and size. VY Canis Majoris might be the largest in terms of radius, but one of the stars discovered here R136a1 is over 6.6 times "heavier". That's rather impressive and has increased what was believed to be the limit for mass of a star.

Size matters baby. Im not really bothered about mass, seeing as supermassive blackholes can be 4.1 MILLION times the mass of our Sun. (the one at the centre of our Galaxy for instance)

Both impressive in their own way:

VY Canis Majoris is the largest in radius:

But R136a1 is just as impressive but in mass:

It makes Canis Majoris look like a starving child.

:)

As impressive as super massive stars are, even more impressive is what goes on in the quantum universe! More so what we don't know that goes on!

Might sound a bit cheesy, but you see and read about things like that, knowing that there's billions of other things like that out there, and here we are debating if NickG should have went back to Asda or not....ahh, scale :).
