I've just read a piece in the paper about how a boy of fifteen was killed attempting to cross a motorway after a row with his father, and in the story it quotes several 'tribute messages' left on a facebook page about the boy. Upon reading them I felt a little irritated and maybe a little disgusted at how they had been written:
His cousin writes:
"Wish i could go 2 sleep n wake up 2 find its all a nightmare!! cant believe uv been taken from us... gna miss u so much, gna miss ur smile, ur laugh all the good times we had and r little sleepovers at mine!!"
Another cousin writes:
"My cheeky little cousin, ur always rmbrd and in our hearts u was the 1 2 cheer every 1 up and make every 1 laugh, nufin will be the same without u! im guna miss u soo much!"
Now, maybe it's just me but the impression these messages give, because of the intended 'text speak' is that it's impersonal, unimportant and trivial. Ultimately it gives the impression that they couldn't be bothered to write correctly whilst writing a tribute to their now dead cousin. Maybe it is just me, but I just feel it's quite insulting. The whole point of text speak is to compact what you're trying to say to get it across quickly, however surely a tribute should be said with full meaning and emotion rather than something you simply want to get said and done - which is what these messages look like.
Your thoughts?
(If a mod could correct the word 'speak' in the title, please)
