Do you find text speak insulting/rude?

I've just read a piece in the paper about how a boy of fifteen was killed attempting to cross a motorway after a row with his father, and in the story it quotes several 'tribute messages' left on a facebook page about the boy. Upon reading them I felt a little irritated and maybe a little disgusted at how they had been written:

His cousin writes:
"Wish i could go 2 sleep n wake up 2 find its all a nightmare!! cant believe uv been taken from us... gna miss u so much, gna miss ur smile, ur laugh all the good times we had and r little sleepovers at mine!!"

Another cousin writes:
"My cheeky little cousin, ur always rmbrd and in our hearts u was the 1 2 cheer every 1 up and make every 1 laugh, nufin will be the same without u! im guna miss u soo much!"

Now, maybe it's just me but the impression these messages give, because of the intended 'text speak' is that it's impersonal, unimportant and trivial. Ultimately it gives the impression that they couldn't be bothered to write correctly whilst writing a tribute to their now dead cousin. Maybe it is just me, but I just feel it's quite insulting. The whole point of text speak is to compact what you're trying to say to get it across quickly, however surely a tribute should be said with full meaning and emotion rather than something you simply want to get said and done - which is what these messages look like.

Your thoughts?

(If a mod could correct the word 'speak' in the title, please)

I think its disgusting that these people couldnt even be bothered, for once, to write a properly formed sentance to express what they feel after this tragic event.

Lazy and pathetic :(

My mother in law who is nearly 60, texts with text speak.... i spend longer trying to figure out what most of it is supposed to be, and most of the time just give up and phone them.

With predictive text so readily available, there is no excuse.

What if the boy who died was a massive fan of txt spk?

Would it be so disgusting then?

:p

Just the evolution of langage. I'm sure your great great great great grandad would be spinning in his grave over your use of the english langage to........ too............ as well.

I find it sad that we have a generation of young people who probably have no reasonable knowledge of the use of the English language and live in a world in which only their peers understand what they are speaking or saying. They can’t be bothered to speak, write and most probably read properly. It’s almost an underclass of uneducated morons. God help them in their lives as no one else will.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Devolution more like. It's just people being too lazy to type a full word.

I don't even think it's to stop typing a full word - I have seen lyke instead of like, and other such atrociousness it makes my skin crawl! The most I have have gone to is tmw instead of tomorrow sometimes on a quick text, but as my phone has predictive it hardly ever happens.

I remember a few years ago a friend set me up with her friend and we got talking over Facebook - she thought I was posh because I typed everything correctly and it was all correctly punctuated.

i recently found out my 82 year old grandma sends SMS in text speak though. very weird considering she worked as a typist for years and loves stuff like countdown , crosswords and other spelling sort of things :o

For a tribute to someone that has passed, writing it in text speak is just so damn lazy :/

Agreed. Quite shameful IMO.

I find text speak a waste of time and tend to ignore it and people who choose to use it, fortunately non of my friends use text speak so all is well in the world! ;)

Exact;y it use to have a purpose when SMS where very short, no predictive text and it took ages to write stuff. However that died years ago, but still people carry on. It makes no sense and is no quicker. It's far slower as you have to add the words.
