So thinking ahead to Guy Forkes the misses and I were thinking of saving some money over the ususal overpriced fireworks. (£100's of pounds its crazy).

What would happen if we decided to spice things up on the cheap by having our normal large bonfire in a field, but with a Calor gas bottle on it?

Would anything happen or is there some sort of safety release valve which would stop a nice bang?

Has anyone ever done this?

Obviously I want to mitigate any danger, so im not being silly and thinking of using a full bottle, maybe a half empty one.

As for the children and our friends children we were thinking of letting them have their own small scale fire for some marshmallows, and keeping the big stuff for the adults!!

Thoughts?

sounds stupid ....

when i was little we had a local bonfire on our street though and we used to throw empty deodrant cans on it like lynx sized and they would make a large BOOOM as they exploded

we had a decent sized bonfire at my fields a few years back, put a massive old cast iron drain pipe in it facing up and threw in a load of aerosol cans 1 at a time, when they heated up it worked like a cannon and fired them away out of site.

I hear that Calor Gas bombs are a wee bit on the dangerous side. ;)

Do you want to kill the whole family? :D

Since you're taking the sensible precaution of trying to blow up only half a calor gas bottle instead of a full one, I think it will be fine.
Make sure you stand close so you can feel the blast wave mind.

I've seen a fire in an industrial unit with Calor gas bottles inside, they go a loooong way. I believe it's called a BLEVE; Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion, not something you want to play with:

We've not done our own fireworks for a long time following an incident with a couple of Roman candles that involved dodging flaming projectiles, running and screaming. Just go to your local Rugby club's show. Tenner entry I bet, baked potatoes too.
