I guess the GTX 460 is a 5830 killer?

How will ATI respond?

They will drop the price further of the 5850 and cut the price of the 5830 or get rid of it all together?

Will they release a 460 beater 5840?

I'm in the line for a new GPU and these 460's @ £150 look like a nice choice in terms of price V performance.

I read that the 460 locks horns with the 5850 but cost's 60 quid less...

Finally NV back in the mid price GFX race and its only good news for us.

Between a 460 and a 5830 i'd definitely get the 460 at these prices. Next to a 5850 though I'd probably be more inclined to go for the 5850 and overclock.

I can't really see prices coming down much more now either. Even when the new series of cards comes out the 5xxx series cards will be eol and retaining value due to shortages as everyone tries to grab themselves another card for crossfire or whatever.

So the 5830 is roughly the same price as 768MB 460 and the 460 is about 5% faster.

Given ATI have made a fat pile of cash more than they expected with this gen I expect the following:

5830 -> £130
5850 -> £175
5770 -> £99

They might wait until the 450 though to drop the price of the 5770

er..

no.

okay the £150 GTX 460s are 768 MB not the 1GB versions which may get to 5850 levels..

most 1gb GTX 460 at the moment have terrible coolers, you'll need a reference card usually about £180-190 or an MSI cyclone £185-190 or a gigabyte oc...

if u can get a 5830 for less than...£140 then you have saved 28% over the 1GB GTX 460 and can probably overclock the 5830 to say provide 14,000 3dmark vantage... the best 850+ mhz core GTX 460s will only get around 14,500...

definitely 460 over the 5830. The 5830 has had too many bits lopped off it (the halved number of ROPs is the main one), which has made it closer in performance to the 5770 than the 5850. But then again, if you're looking to spend circa 200quid on the 1gig model, you may as well get a 5850, unfortunately making the price band for the 460 rather small =/

Yeah but you could say the same about the 460!

The 5830 is dead in the water at the moment, it's slower and equal in price

no. its cheaper and faster than the 768 i think...

dont think so mate:

Lowest 5830 here is £158
Lowest 460 is £152

And the 5830 is slower:

you say that but its just not true. the gtx 460 is underwhelming at stock. the hd5830 at a low price is not a bad buy.

so the difference is 6% in 1 unspecified game

im not saying ocuk are most competative on hd5830. i said, if you read my post, if you can get one for 140 or less..

go through this guru3d review of the gtx 460

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-460-review/17

you'll see on a few benchies the 5830 beats the 768 GTX 460. and its cheaper.

some people are thinking the gtx 460 is the new messiah its actually GOOD but its not blowing everything else out of the water its simply matching what has been available for months...

The £150 *768Mb* GTX460 is about the same speed as the HD5830. The £190 1024Mb GTX460 is the HD5830 killer.

no, read the reviews mate see jiggers post...

a 140 5830 wont be killed by a 768 GTX 460.

I quoted your post in full

so you quoted me and then ignored the price i said in favour of your own... lets not limit ourselves to where we shop, lets just see what the cheapest 5830's are out there...

its not mythical, its not dodgy and it is in stock...

i should know its kosha as i ordered one from there, u can check my trust rating and see that i infact sold mine on on these very forums.

Lol, where is this mythical 5830, not in stock at dodgy retailers that show a low price to get people in I guess
May be it is £140 ex VAT :D

It wouldn't be the first time I see graphic card prices on google shopping being cheap, but once clicking link to the product page of that retailer once would discover the price is excluding VAT lol

All the usual places I checked are selling for over £150 including vat, so if you want to compare the 5830 in general to the 460 it's not fair doing it at £140 because it just isnt selling for that price.
