To NAS or not to NAS?

yer so what NAS should I get?

if the speeds are the same as sata read/writes then it will be worth it.

2-4TB drive space though.

from a connectivity point I'll probably connect ethernet from NAS to Main PC (1 gigabit)
then NAS to both xbox and PS3 - so it will need 3 ethernet ports at the least

IF I Was to connect NAS to Router then the router would slow down the connection to 10/100

On some of the NAS i short listed, it says you cant plug it straight into the ethernet port on the computer.

I think you have to connect the NAS to the PC via the router. Unless it differs from make to make.

mmm why so?

that means the speed would drop as my router is 10/100

Just buy a gigabit switch? Thats what I did and it works well, get 25-30MB/s write and 50-55MB/s read from my NAS (windows XP based)

The latest custom pc has a big roundup of NAS boxes. they liked the RND2000, it was pretty quick for the money, I believe its similar to the 2120 :
Large file reads : 38MB/sec
Large file writes:16.5MB/sec

yer it's not as simple as buying that though. I have to think hard about this all.

I could stick the NAS on a totally different network from my internet network though. Wired for the NAS
wireless for net

The Duo 2000 is just the enclosure. 2x00 includes a HDD (500GB or 1TB) though you can save £20 odd buying them separate. EDIT:oops i could be wrong here, the 2000 looks different..ah

Available Configurations

RND2150 – 1 x 500 GB HDD
RND2175 – 1 x 750 GB HDD
RND2110 – 1 x 1000 GB HDD

I am going for a WD Caviar Green 1tb. -£52

Though (if your interested psd) my shortlist is (they all have Bittorrent, power save and media streaming):

ReadyNAS Duo (2 empty bays) (enclosure only) - £141
QNA TS-1100 (single bay) (enclosure only) - £129
Synology DS110J (single bay) (enclosure only) - £115

Sure, if you pay for it.

I have thought and cant justify £200 so i am going for a 1TB (£100) or 2TB (£140) buffalo linkstation, probably 2tTb so it will last me! I wil not be sending large files so :p It does everything I want

I found it was actually cheaper to build a server instead of buying a NAS, also my server is able to transcode 1080p with 6 channel audio to my ps3 or my xbox as well as all my flac audio which the ps3 can not play without being converted.

yer but a nas with DLNA can do that too - that would be big on my list to stream to my ps3 playing HD content

I am currently looking at doing the same with an atom based system, much cheaper if you want a 4+ drive setup it seems. Plus i plan to do a NAS/ media PC setup with a linux distro. Plus building is so much more fun!

I will also probably have it running a php/mysql server for any development, TV tuner for recording and maybe a torrent client too with all the nas stuff. Just trying to find a nice smallish case with room for 4 drives that doesn't cost loads :(

costing wise, i reckon about 200 before drives and i think you will just get so much more with it :)

lol 12TB.

WD mybook world edition II seem quite good, perhaps expensive(?) but had some nice features. Plus I like the look of it - depends where you need it to live.
