Why is Racism Unacceptable but Homophobia is Acceptable?

Homophobia is clearly deemed acceptable compared to racism. If you see someone who says they don't like gay people, then whilst people might not agree or like that statement or the person it's coming from, it's not that shocking.

However were a person to come out and say they don't like *insert ethnic group*, people would be rather shocked and appalled and find it totally unacceptable.
 
Why is it that religion is usually touted as the main forum for homophobia? It really isn't like that where I'm from and around the people I go to church with. Homosexuality is obviously not openly encouraged by the church, but for crying out loud don't think that we don't like gay people. That's almost as draconian an outlook as that of outwardly homophobic people. There are a few vocal people who tarnish the reputation of the majority, and often in a really unreasonable, unfair way with respect to homosexuals.

A person is a person, whether they're gay/black/white/green/whatever.

You could look at it from the other side and see that there are a few militant homosexuals that give the rest a less than favourable reputation with certain people.

To reiterate - I'm a Christian, and have no problem with you if you're gay. I know of a couple of hundred other Christians with the same outlook, and I know there are many more.
 
The same way they get away with being sexist.

religion is freedom I suppose. Just have to be careful it doesn't impinge others freedom.

Modern CofE aint so bad compared to some of em.

Well this is just like everything else.

If I said I liked eating catfood, people would be like 'it's wrong, but whatever'. If I said I liked eating poo, people would be rather shocked and appalled.

Is the question basically 'why are their different levels of shockability, with different wrong things'?

I think the point is that its not really acceptable to taunt people for being daywalkers... Mainly as you cant help being like that (from what i understand im not a daywalker!)

Think the pc attitude is confusing as its trying to define whats acceptable intolerance and what is really intolerant and in the jumble forgot that its all honky fools getting in a muddle

True racism and homophobia is not acceptable. However some people cannot understand "comic racism" or "comic homophobia", like you get in south park or family guy- all they do is poke fun at racial stereotypes etc. It's quite rare, outside of religeon to find homophobia that goes unpunished. The homophobia- religeon "argument" is an interesting one. I was brought up in a fairly strict (by todays standards) christian family- the bible does say that being a homosexual is wrong, but it does not teach homophobia. In Chrisitanity every sin is equal (well nearly every) so homosexuals should get the same treatment as every other sinner on the earth in the eyes of the bible (or my interpretation of it).. although its not quite that simple, because being a practising homosexual- in the eyes of the bible is like being a repeat offender - you are not acknowledging your sins. --- I'm not saying i agree with any of this, just trying to make the murky water a bit clearer.-- Theres a difference between not agreeing with homosexual practice, and being a homophobe... it's very similar as not agreeing with another persons religeon, theres a difference of opinion, and then theres intolerance....
 
When I was a kid we used to refer to the local newsagent as the "**** shop" and the local Chinese takeaway as "Chinky"

So for instance...

"What u doing for tea tonight buddy?"

"Just off down the Chinky for a sweet and sour!"


There was no racism intended in either of these uses. More just accepted shorthand.

I think people who shout racism are only offended when it suits them.

If people were GENUINELY racist then the "**** shop" or the "chinky" probably wouldnt have any windows left, and people wouldnt be going in there and giving them their money.

In addition, we always used gay in a derogatory manner as children, christ, even I do now...

I regularly call my friends poofs, faggots, ladies etc, its all just part of the banter and people seem to get confused between this and actual Homophobia.

Homophobia to me would me a gay guy getting set upon by a gang of youths, perhaps ending up in hospital with no teeth.

Other people seem to think over hearing a conversation where someone even dares to mention the word gay as Homophobic... Where is the line drawn?

While I don't think anyone is being racist or means any harm by it, I hear Chinese Takeway referred to as 'Chinkies' all the time.

Lev 20:13 "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death."

I'm fairly sure saying homosexuals should be dead counts as homophobia... however there are several hundred ridiculous statements like this in the Bible.
