Morning all,

I sold an item on eBay, which was sent three weeks ago and has not yet arrived, so we (the buyer and I) believe it has now turned into a Royal Mail lost item statistic ;)

I guess I'm just asking for people's experiences in such situations really.. Has anyone had any success claiming for lost items sent with standard RM 1st Class, with no proof of postage (it was sent via work with a franking machine)?

Cheers,
Howard.

You can put in a claim, but you need to fill in the relevant document.

You will have to jump through hoops. What value was it? You will get back 6 1st class stamps. To get more, you will really have to fight for it.
I sell a lot of stuff on ebay and website, and a few parcels do go missing. Its just not worth claiming for them. My time is worth more than the value that went missing.

It was a processor, only sold for £36 and I understand that's less than the standard compensation allowance.. I've filled in the form and will send as much evidence as I can, fingers crossed..

1st thing to do, give yourself a slap for not sending it signed for and hiving it insured.

Next thing, refund the buyer.

Third thing, fill out a claim form from the Royal Mail and cross your fingers (and toes) but be realistic about your chances of compensation.

It is insured to 100x the value 1st class stamp.

Recorded delivery is not really worth it

It is when it comes to eBay.

Not only have you got a proof of postage, you've also got a proof of delivery should anything go wrong in terms of a dispute from the buyer.

Unless its a really cheap item that you can forget about if it got lost, it always makes sense to send it recorded.

Hi

best thing to do would be to send an item to a mate first class, ask for proof of posting, then claim its been lost 3 weeks later and claim the £34 back from rm, you fill out a form and sign at the bottom and get the money (cheque) after a few weeks.

You do know it records the address and gets stamped?

Recorded delivery is not worth it with Ebay at all.
They are only interested in a trackable delivery service and that means Special Delivery or a courier.
Using Recorded Delivery will not help with any disputes.

Special Delivery starts at around £5 - so charge £5 for delivery on those smaller items explaining in your advert that you will only send via Special Delivery hence the charge.

No it's not.
While Recorded Signed For doesn't cover you for expensive items, like Special Delivery does, it still gives you proof of postage, and more importantly, a proof of delivery. Thus if a buyer tries to claim they never received it, you have a leg to stand on when there is a proof who and when it was signed for.

I sent it from work (franking machine) so I don't have any receipts or owt :(

I'm not *that* fussed tbh if Royal Mail don't want to compensate me, in hindsight I should have RMSD'd it, but hey. It'd just be nice, and I was wondering on other people's experiences.

Thanks for the replies so far :)
