Wheel wobble at ~80mph

I have been experiencing steering wheel wobble when cruising at speeds of 75-85mph. This has been going on for the last couple of months but until recently I just put it down to wheel balancing, as around the same time it started I had hit a curb with my rear wheel (RWD y0!) and gouged a bit out of it.

Roll forward 2 months and I replace the wheel and get all 4 balanced. The wobble improves but now seems intermittant -- sometimes it is there and sometimes it is not. For example today it was really aggressive on my way to work but not noticable at all on my drive home.

What should I be looking for? What would make the wobble come and go like that? I have spacers on my front wheels but when I've had balance issues with them before it's always been at a slower speed (around 60).

Any help appreciated!

If the vibration is through the wheel then it's nothing to do with the rear. Front wheel balance is extremely suspect especially considering the spacers. They hub-centric ones?

I thought wobble from the rear would be felt in the whole car /and/ the steering wheel?

If I am wrong then that at least narrows it down a bit.

The spacers aren't hub centric, but if they were off balance surely the vibration would be consistent?
