Lucky escape from a speeding ticket

So, as many of you know I moved to the US a few years ago and have been enjoying myself out here. There's not much I haven't driven supercar wise and to this day, almost 10 years of driving, I've yet to receive a speeding ticket.

Cue last night, I was on the way home from Porsche after having a very painful operation done on my wallet, in the form of a new clutch and flywheel in the 911. They'd done a bunch of tweaking as well so I was expecting some rattles or squeaks here and there, and I wasn't disappointed.

Fast forward about an hour, it's dark and I'm pulling into my neighborhood which is gated and has contracted police patrols within. As I accelerate after the security gate/guardhouse I hear a rattle at around 3k rpm, so I shift into second and accelerate again, not noticing the parked police car with his lights off and a nice laser gun pointed at me! The limit is 25, naturally I was doing significantly more, around 45mph and he proceeds to pull me over. Keep in mind, after the security gate, there's about half a mile of beautiful landscaping before you actually reach any houses.

I'm as polite as can be to the policeman, after all, it's late, I don't want to get a ticket and I do, unlike a lot of people, respect the work they do. He takes my documents and goes back to his car for about five minutes before returning to my window. It's then that I can't quite believe what I'm hearing, he says "David, it's your lucky night, I was about to write you a ticket for $500 but, I'm all out of speeding tickets. Have a good night". Pretty lucky I'm sure you'll agree.

It is ironic though that my first ever speeding ticket would have been for doing 45 in a 25, given that I spend most of my weekends with friends in Lambos, Ferrari's and other exotica, doing slightly higher speeds. Still, cruise control goes on now the second I enter my neighborhood, tickets out here are expensive!

How lucky is that!

$500, though  - To be honest, rather take a $500 hit than have the UK system of 3points and and then get bent over by insurance.

No, what is ironic though is: you drive super-cars, live in a gated community with a contracted Police force but then say speeding tickets are expensive.

I see you completely missed the point there. For one, I don't get to live like I do by burning or throwing my money down the drain, secondly, I'd just spent $4k getting my clutch done which was a rather unexpected and untimely expense given that I'd just that week, bought another house! I don't know what it's like in the UK right now but to buy a house over here at the moment, you need massive down payments, ~50% of the house.

Result, i just fell foul of a speeding ticket myself.

I take it these new parts weren't for the GT3 RS?!

God no, I'd be a pretty lousy driver if I could cook a clutch in a week! As stated in the other thread anyway, that car is my Dad's and is back in the UK, I'll write up my report when I visit in a couple of weeks.

Same. I'd much rather a system in the UK where minor traffic offences (where you'd get 3 points) punished by fines.

Always found it unfair, the UK points system.

The fines for speeding are a fair bit higher here but:

Only beginning drivers ( license <5 years) can get points.
30kph too fast or 40kph too fast on the motorway, alcohol, tailgating and other serious offenses mean 1 point, small offenses no points at all.
Lose license & retake test at 3 points.
After 5 years since you have your license, no more points, never...
Insurance does not know about points, only the police does in their database, you are not shafted by insurance for having 1 or 2 points.
You are not shafted by insurance if you lose your license ( >50kph too fast or serious offense ), you get it back after 2 weeks with usually a big ( 300€ or so) fine. Having been banned before does not affect insurance at all.

That system here would mean drunk drivers everywhere, it simply wouldn't work and is too lax :)

Alcohol rules are as following:

0.2 promille limit for beginning drivers ( >5 years).
0.5 for older drivers.

Light alcohol offenses ( it may be anything, a combo of a ban, fine and jail, depending on the severity) usually ( or mostly) mean a ban for 12 or 24 hours, a point for beginning drivers and a 200-400€ fine.

Over 1,3 promille (0,8 promille for beginning drivers) they have to follow an educational alcohol course before they can drive again, this costs 770€ for a 3 day ( over 6 weeks) course.

I've just had a quick search & found that your running a C2S at +400bhp, I assume thats why the clutch finally gave in, how many miles had it covered with those ponies?
And good man for dodging a fine!
