I've always had an interest in weapons, their historical significance, how they are made and so on. Anyway, I've realised recently that I would rather like to own a gun or two but, being a UK citizen, I'm finding some of the laws quite limiting.

I quite fancy a deactivated weapon: one that is in full working order so I can strip it down etcetera. I have been told that even though many of these can be re-activated you do not need a license of any kind -is this true?

Does anyone know how easy it is to become a gun club member? Can you shoot a wide variety of weapons at them, or are they mainly shotguns and target rifles?

Would it be worth getting an air rifle? Or are they mainly for a bit of target practice and rat shooting?

Many a Lee Enfield #8 .303 about, not much to strip off one of these mind. Would certainly take care of a rat, forget having to pick up any remains.

I used to shoot for the Great Britain shooting team so may well be able to help you

A few questions. They might seem odd but they will help me help you

Do you just want to own things that look like guns but can't actually be fired i.e you like the aesthetics/machismo etc?

Do you want to own guns that work and fire them at a rifle range?

Do you want to own guns and shoot them at a firing range? This is diferrent to "firing" a gun as it implies that you want to really learn what you are doing and perhaps take it up as a competitive level

Im sure you could join a clay pigeon shooting club in your area if you wanted. Im not in agreement with guns at all however. They were invented to destroy things. Always keep that foremost in your mind.

The way I feel - if ya enjoy shooting guns, then go paintballing. That's the best craic I have had on a day out with mates...
Can't recommend it enough :)

I do like the history and aesthetics of firearms and for that reason they don't have to be able to shoot. Having said that, if I found a gun club and had a go I would probably really enjoy it. Who knows where that would lead?

Are gun clubs expensive? D'you have to wear plaid? Can you shoot a variety of weapons such as ex-military models?

Was just speaking to my Aunt (who lives in Norfolk) and she was saying in England you have proper shops where you can purchase rifles providing you have a licence... That's unheard of here in Northern Ireland. Takes ages to even get a Clay Pigeon shooting licence. Get Paintballing lads !! Such a great day out :)

Target small bore rifle (.22 rimfire) is shot at 25m and 50m from prone, kneeling or standing postitions (or a mix of all 3). It's probably the cheapest and easiest way to start if you don't want to go down the air rifle route.

Next up from that is full bore rifle. This is shot at anything from 25m up to 1kilometre (stickledown range at bisley). quite expensive.

You're really very lucky if you live near bisley as it's the home of target shooting in the UK

I don't know much about guns - but surely if they are de-activated, it's possible if you've got skill to enable them again?

So aren't they still dangerous to sell?

If you're after the look of guns and the military simulation aspect of shooting them get yourself to an airsoft game (forget paintball).

Here's a pic of my two new beauties that I use 2 sundays a month to pepper other like minded individuals with 6mm plastic bbs.

Sorry about the lousy quality (it's a phone snap) they're a Sig 551 and M92 (both predominantly metal construction).

iirc usually it's things like the barrel split all the way down/the chamber split/filled with lead.

You if you have the equipment to make new parts you could have just made it from scratch really.
