Why is Racism Unacceptable but Homophobia is Acceptable?

Racists and Homophobic people dont bother me.

Sure ive had a few homophobic comments thrown at me over the years but i actually find them really funny.

They remind me of stupid jesters sent to entertain the queen.

like the previous guy said. racism is totally different area. when your born u dont have a choice to decide to be black or white or asian. its genetic dna. unless they find a gay gene. then its all speculation about ur born gay etc

sexuality is a choice.

its social conditioning and engineering through society that causes this.

thats like saying why is it acceptable people black people calling each other **** but i cant say it. just cause your gay doesnt mean you have the same rights as an ethnic minority.

its like the youtube ginger kid arguing that his gingerness and comparing it to blacks and mexicans saying they get more respect.

you like dick just accept it, there no point moaning about it. im sure u have learnt to deal with being abused.

there was a documentary on c4 about africa last taboo. i think compared to what i saw on that documentary. u are very lucky to be gay in the UK

yeah i would like to know the day when jon venebales decided his was gonna be the way he was too or he was born that way.

naturally humans are attracted to the opposite sex. its genetic u dont really make a decision. unless you want to deviate from natural law of man and women vagina and penis

Woaw thats fresh info. Where can i find help to make my choice?

no its the underlining message being posted on this thread.

and i think you've made your choice and your happy and dont feel that your are doing anything wrong.

so what is the problem.

sandman06, genes can mutate to bring other behavioural attitudes and general characteristics... why not sexuality? I don't think it is a choice, certainly not for a lot of people. Some cases may be different but to categorise the whole of homosexuality as a lifestyle choice is fairly far-fetched.

For me since leaving primary school in year 7 i realized i did not fancy girls. But i always had more girlfriends than boyfriends.

Then secondary came ,lol. That was awkward. All my guy mates would be chasing girls and my girl mates chasing guys and there was me stuck in the middle not known what the hell was going on. But all that time knowing that i was attracted to men.

So after about 2 1/2 years at high school i started hanging out with a great close group of 5 friends, which are still my best friends to this day. I was able to confide in them and talk about what the hell was going on. By the time we were all 16 we would visit the now polo lounge in glasgow together, about every second weekend. One of the best few months of my life.

After that i was 17 when i told my parents, they disapproved and were shocked, as im not camp or overly 'gay'. Then at the age of 19 i move out and life just keeps getting better.

Bloody hell long post, lol.

I was waiting for someone to talk about gene mutations etc, that is just fuel for the fire for some people!

I don't mean it in an OMG MUTANTS!!!111 way. :p I am coming from a purely scientific background, since sandman decided to display his 'knowledge' about sexuality being related to genetics.

yes but for example the fibrillin gene can be targeted to see if you have a genetic mutation. it takes ages though to find and target to establish if you have a mutation. so they can sometimes look for certain syndromes/mutations by conditions and are scored by a chart. if you meet a certain set then you are classified to have that mutation/syndrome.

Ok, so what is your point? You have links to scientific studies that prove homosexuality isn't related to genes? If so, I'd love to see them.

no i dont. but i dont think its on the top agenda of mankind i think we got better things to do like find a cure for cancer and aids, rather than try determine if people are born gay.

i was explaining genetics because are gnome is so complex, that everything about us is programmed there, so if this claim about being born gay is true. Then it will be found in our dna.

Because race is something you are born with and cannot be changed. You aren't born homosexual, it is a choice and as most choices in life, peoples choices get critisised.

This may have been quoted and challenged later in the thread, but I just thought I'd step in there...

Do you really think it's a choice? You think gay people 'decided' one day that they'd be attracted to people of the same sex, rather than the opposite sex they've been coveting up to that point? Or do you mean that they 'choose' to live true to their own nature, rather than suppressing their unnatural urges for the sake of smoother transition through life? I'd dispute that most thoroughly. Being gay doesn't run in families (probably for obvious reasons :D), it's probably not a genetic variation and it's certainly not a product of conditioning in the majority of cases. Perhaps this is something you truly believe or perhaps it was a slip of language, but it reminds me of that Simpsons episode where they see a film called Left Below - specifically the man in the river of fire crying out "Oh, why did I choose to be gay!".

Edit: Clearly was disputed quite thoroughly for a number of posts directly after. I notice Nath hasn't responded yet, though....

Quoted for hilarity of typos

Edit: As mentioned a few times in this thread, I also use 'gay' for pretty much anything that sucks. Technically I'm bisexual, but I'm not very interested in men at all - there are few men I find attractive, in RL or the media, and I've never liked the idea of turning up the marmite motorway, but I've had relationships with men and may well do again. Women are just hot, is all. It doesn't stop me using 'gay' for anyhting I find disappointing, or to deride my mates, but perhaps we could get the opinion of a fully-fledged poleturner?
