Been running my old rig for over 3 years now & now Ive just started using a 1080p tv rather thean 720p and the games are really starting to struggle now:
Crysis1=15fps at v-high no aa
Assassins Creed 2= 30-60fps
Although the UT3 engine still runs sweet at 1080p, giving 60fps most of the time :) Singularity is a great game...

This 8800gtx has been great, well its the 3rd 8800 as the 1st died in 1 day & the 2nd set on fire after 3 months (smoke plooming from a pc aint good).

My current PSU: Tagen 580w has an all singing dry joint so im expecting it to go down soon. Though its been powering the rig with 4 h-drives/water pump for 3 years, so its done well.

The rig spends most of its time in windows media center for tv/hd films (CUDA will be nice) and has the occasional game thrown at it.
Im not worried about the CPU/RAM yet but thinking Crysis 2 will really kill the 3year old graphics card!

I was thinking of getting:
KFA2 GeForce GTX 460

OCUK Swift 750W

I cant afford a fancy PSU this time & hoping 750w is enough for a nv460.
Does a nv460 use more power than a 8800gtx?
Under full load with my current 580w, apart from the CPU hitting 98c, the 12v rail drops to 11.34v, though games have always run fine.
Well I was told a 580w would never run my old rig, but it has for 3 years.

Oh, is a nv460 much faster than my old 8800gtx with its 384bit memory interface?

struggling find these answers in google
much thanks

the swifts are for basic computing not high end gaming :D

look into a hx tx range from corsair or summat similar

i dont the the 460 its standard 256 bit memory the 300 bits kick in at the 470

Ah, so a cheap PSU wont cut the mustard even if its got the watts?

According to GPUZ the 460 has a lower texture fill rate than my old 8800.
Trying find some game benchmark scores.

This hype around 460s is only caused by a certain level of competition that they brought in to the game. They're not the best performing nor the best value cards around but they are a reasonable and justifiable purchases for anyone looking for the card within that budget.

Get the best card you can afford tbh. If it's 470, then go for it. Radeon 5850 won't perform worse if you overclock both.

the thing with crysis/2 it is hard to say as it is being released on consoles also so could well end up being heavily dumbed down graphically compared to the original (that is just a guess could well be very wrong).
IF it is like the original then i bet your 88gtx would run it just not maxed out.
I think if you hardly game and mainly use media then noise must be a concern for you, 470's are hot and loud (looking at reviews).

I think there is thread going atm somewhere near top, basically a 460gtx should be apprx twice as fast as 88gtx

I have a few 120mm fans in the tower anyway to keep the beast under 100c, lol. Well it is an ancient quad B3, so noise/temp are not issues.
I can just afford:
Zotac GeForce GTX 470
OCUK Swift 750W
Just worried the PSU may die as the 470 seams to use 100w more than a 460 under load.
Going have a drive to ocuk soon, they prob be too busy know if the PSU is enough.
My old Tagen is a good make & its feeble 580w output beat the odds, is a Swift PSU any good as well? ta

i never knew swiftech made psu's lol thats not a good sign you want a known quality brand especially for such hungry card, does 470 really need 750W?

http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/product_geforce_gtx_470_uk.html nvidia recommend minimum 550w psu so a quality 600w would be fine

sorry yes wc missed that, i just think that a power hungry system like yours is best backed up by quality psu

yeah dont worry about that, i think you lose something like literally 2% of max performance (but i am not certain of that you should check) but it will 100% work in a 1.1 pcie slot

Ah phew the PCIe is ok, I was beginning think I was heading towards a whole system upgrade & a 2nd mortgage, lol. The Gigabyte P35 cant run 4 sticks of ram at 1066 but I'll get a lot for it as scrap as its loaded with copper :D

The nVidia site says the nv470 needs 550w, is that just for the card or everything?
Ok, leaning towards this PSU now as I cant find a good 600w for a good price.

i believe that is 550w for the entire system as you wc i guess 600w quality brand would be ok.

honestly i cant comment on those ocuk psu's. Surely ocuk dont make psu? they must be cheap brands like ocuk value graphics cards which is just a random budget brand.
im talking enermax/corsair/coolermaster/antec these are the psu you want behind power hungry system

I have the non modular version of that psu and its not bad imo as long as your not going to be pushing it to its limits it should be fine, Its also very quiet but the only gripe i have is that only the 24 pin cable is braided and the rest are not but then again you cant really expect much from a psu costing that much also they are made by powercool.

Home now & put the parts in the rig which took ages because the antec gaming 900 case is too small now lol.
I went for this PSU & was shocked when I first picked up the box as it was quite heavy.
Cooler Master GX 750W

Took a phone pic when rebuilding & 1 of the darn hard drives would not work on a sata power lead as used molex before, this took a lot of head scratching to figure out, lol. Thats raid 4 ya.

Im a bit out of touch with overclocking, just tried rivatuner & it didnt find the card.
Its idling at 70c, which dont look good although I have a small breezy case.
Does anyone know how to overclock these geforce cards & what speeds I should aim for.
Is there a new burn test for checking temps/stability?

thx
