Bankers drafts

Milton Keynes

You got a good shout of getting it i would say, tell her to take her passport, they will want to see it and one other form of ID for that amount.

They ask me for that and im in there twice a week for lumps.

Couple of points, a draft unless stolen cannot be cancelled unless it is taken back to the bank so if you are present at their bank when its produced then its going to be fine but it will go through the clearing cycle so it doesnt clear properly until the 7th working day (day paid in + 6).

No mention of their bank but Natwest/RBS can do >10k on the spot - there is an amount that 24 hours notice is needed but it doesnt sound like its going to be in excess of that limit (i'd rather not say what it is). Card and one form of i.d (passport or driving license) would do it.

Such huge quantities of cash must be a proper faff in the UK though, what with the biggest note being £50!

I sold mine today for cash, but at least it was a few €500s, €200s €50s, €20s and then about 20 €100s..
But I guess if you hand it to bank clerk, they'll use a counting machine to count >£10ks worth of £50s!

They weigh it :)

I thought they only did that with coins.
Surely with so many £50 notes, the grime will add up, thereby being incorrect?

I would never accept a bankers draft under any circumstances, they are not irrevocable.

There are only two safe methods for transferring money for the sale of a vehicle.

1. A CHAPS Payment

+ Same day
+ Irrevocable

- Is not instantaneous, can be several hours of waiting around which is not ideal.
- May be considered expensive for a relatively low value transaction.

The fees for CHAPS are as follows:

£20 Barclays
£20 Nationwide
£20 Leeds
£25 Stroud & Swindon
£30 Newcastle BS
£30 Derbyshire BS
£35 Northern Rock
£35 Manchester BS
£35 Chelsea BS
£35 Birmingham Midshires

2. Cash over the counter

Buyer arranged with his bank to withdraw the necessary cash from his bank. You then walk over with him to your bank, with him holding the cash all the time. He then pays the money into your account over the counter and it is checked by the cashier.

+ No cost
+ No risk to the seller
+ Pretty much instantaneous

- Buyer's bank may want a couple of days to arrange collection of high amounts of cash.

Hope that helps

Its usually to check the already bundled notes they are dispensing, but they do weigh them.

Iv seen them pulling out ones with selotape on, i suppose that throws off the weight.

I ended up going to their house, driving to their local branch. Validating the cheque was valid. Bank statement printed there and then quoted the cheque reference, called the number on the back of the cheque to confirm validity. Copy of the bank statement and cheque and paid into my bank. Will clear Thursday I have handed them the car as I feel safe it's fine.

Excellent, good job.

Too late not but for anyone else - don't call a number printed on the back, find out the branch phone number yourself and call that.

When I sold the Saab, bloke paid by bankers draft - went into the branch with him and paid it it, the clerk called the issuing branch for me to check it as both banks were natwest. I was happy with that so sent him on his way!

Why not, they ask for the cheque number etc and validate it over the phone?

My advise from my experience is they are 'not as good as cash', go to their branch and get the draft validated in person. And check the the buyers bank statement to reference the cheque back
