Hello all,

So as always its easier to turn to General Hardware for at least some starting ideas for a build :)
I would like to get a Corsair 700D
I would prefer intel chip.
The computer will be used exclusively for gaming.
I guess the budget could squeeze up to £1300 if necessary.
I don't need any of the gubbins (keyboard, mouse etc, just the box itself).
I already have windows 7.

Thanks for the help.
Mike

Thanks for the quick responses!
I am leaning more towards an ATI card at the moment. Could anyone pass comment on the specs above?

Both have gone for an i7 chip whereas there seem to be numerous threads regarding i5 being better for gaming (or at least more bang for your buck). Is that simple because i have a reasonable amount of money to play with?

at stock speeds a i5 750 cpu is faster than a i7 920/930 due to a more aggressive turbo boost.

but that bundle has the i7 overclocked to 4ghz, which = bye bye i5.

Just for the sake of it, i5 audiophile spec in case you feel like treating yourself to some new speakers and a soundcard. It'd still be insanely fast in games especially if you overclocked the CPU.

stulid - i don't see the overclocked bundle that you have quoted on the website? If I look here

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=339&subid=1801

its nowhere to be seen! I am missing something?

Also I don't know if its just the formatting of the text on the bundle that you reccomended but it doesnt seem to include any RAM?!

Also, not sure if its just because

its here mate- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-046-OE&groupid=43&catid=339&subcat=1801

only the choice of cooler and motherboard is customizable, which explains why it looks like theres no ram in the text.

dont know where to start.

firstly the 920 and 930 cpu at 4ghz are identical speed wise, yet the 930 bundle costs more money.

secondly the Antec cp psu only fits about 4 different Antec cases.

thirdly the powercolor 5870 offers nothing over the much cheaper HIS- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-002-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502

Hey stulid, thanks for the help and advice, its like youre my personal shopper....if you ever need help with erm.....accounting or corporate finance i'm your man....apart from that I have nothing to offer :D

Would it worth taking the
"Corsair HX 620W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-620HXUK)"

out of my old pc? Would it be a) powerful enough (wattage) b) reliable still? I bought it 3 years ago, been amazing but I don't know if these things have a limited shelf life.

Was thinking of getting this
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card [11161-01-50R]
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-214-SP
over the graphics card that you recomneded on the basis of the reviews. Any thoughts? To save money was going to get a non SSD HDD as its an easy upgrade to get at christmas

Thanks again
Mike

absolutely re-use that corsair psu, it will cope with a single 5870 just fine.

as for is that sapphire worth the extra for a copy of Colin McRae DiRT 2, because I cant see anything else, it has the same 2 year warranty and the same clock speeds as the HIS, then I would have to say no.

do you have a dvd rewriter that you can reuse? because I have just noticed I left it out of my specs. but they cost £14

Awesome!

Ok (semi) final question. At the moment I think the extra modular cables for the PSU are at my parents house. Considering I am running this card
"OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - OEM"
and this mobo
Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Are there any additional cables that you can think that I would need? Just kind an off the top of your head kinda question as I don't think OcUK stock modular power cables

you will need.

24 pin cable and 8pin ATX for the motherboard.

Two 6pin pci-e for a single 5870 graphics card.

Two sata for a SSD and a single hardrive.

either a 4pin molex if you have an older dvd rewriter, or another sata for a new dvd rewriter.

and maybe one or two 4pin molex connectors for case fans

dont really know.

can you not use a tape measure to get the cable lengths, and then compare to the case dimensions?

taking into account things like cables routing behind the motherboard tray, and the dvd writer being at the very top of the case, and hard disks at the bottom.
