Gtx 470 vs hd5850

^ well yeah pretty much, and you also need it open to have a decent fan profile

@KelticDaz, you can't really judge the noise until you hear it in person

Right, well I honestly lmfao to that video!

I only sit 2 feetfrom my pc, and its at ear level, so ifthe card gets that loud, I think thats the end of the GTX 470 investigation!

Thats not your pc is it?

Check with NickG, he had one and sent it back for being too loud.

No, check out youtube for other (loud) 470 vid's!

in afterburner u set it to load at start up, save ur overclocked profile to one of the 5 profile slots and set what overclock u want for 3d settings easy

i found 835 was easy to get with either card i own

True enough, but when people on here send the card back for being too loud, I gotta wonder; and I've never read a review which said , wow, listen to how quiet this card is!

I think there is very likely some truth, albeit exagerated at times, about how noisey these cards can be. You can't fairly judge unless you're there and actually hearing it for your self, if I were to get one of the 470's or 480's water cooling would be on my mind for the longer term use of the card.

LMAO at that video with a mic almost touching the card.
Does anyone actually play games with their face in their PC? Ridiculous!

My 470 is barely louder then my old 275 which was the same volume as my old 8800.
Noise is exaggerated by people with 5850/5870s trying to justify their purchases.
The 470 beats the 5850 hands down & often beats the 5870 when both overclocked.
Proof: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=453143.
The 5870 is pointless as the 5850 can clock just as high, they are the same card with different clock speeds.

So its 470 vs 5850 and the 470 is faster and priced accordingly.
I might buy a second one.

I would consider a GTX 470, but Iv never overclocked before in my life.....

Today, I was investigating the GTX 470. It seemed ok, with some benchmarks saying it was closer to a 5850, and others showing it had higher minimums than a 5870.

I had heard they run hot and are loud. I sit two feet from my computer, and it is at ear level, when I heard stories that people have actually sent back their GTX 470 bause it was loud, then I thought, well that rules that out completly as I wont be able to hear anything with a card that is super loud.

Now your telling me it isnt that loud.

I am also considering a 5870 at £275. The reason why I would like to get the gtx 470 is becuase in terms of tesselation and Dx11, it probably is a bit more future proof than the 5870.

On the other hand, if I was to get a 5870, with the refresh supposedly happening in october I may hold off.

With your GTX 470 and overclocking, what can a complete newbie achive out of the box with ease? Will this newbie overclocks match the performance of a 5870?

I game at 1920x1200, so it needs to be able to cope at that resolution.

Is there away of using the msi afterburner software, making your overclock tweaks and then closing the program, and not having to run it all the time in the back ground?

Becuase I think that would cheese me off as well.

If my RMA gets sorted on my 5870 I may sell any replacement I get and buy one of these instead. Any idea of the length of a 470 compared to the 5870s?

Shorter, the 5870 is on the bottom

If you've got 5870 money to play with, then get the 5870! it is faster, cooler and more efficient than a GTX470 (is why it costs 40 odd quid more).

As for buying cards for DX11 and tessellation, I would not suggest basing your buying decision on that alone. Tessellation is nice, but only one game uses it at the moment, and the image quality increase is non-existent. Quantifiable image quality enhancement via tessellation will not happen for a very long while, at which point all these cards will be more mature or end-of-lined.

That said, ATI did state that their next load of drivers would center around increasing the performance of tessellation on their cards (god knows why) so maybe they know something we don't =/

*edit* just had a look at 5850 prices, the card is back at 210quid. Between a 5850 and a 470, I would suggest the 470, but between the 470 and 5870 I would go 5870

So then u clock the 5870 and it goes even faster  They r not the same card and the extra cores (160) do make a difference at higher resolutions. And no i'm not trying to justify my 5870 purchase, i tried both 5850 and 5870 before i settled on the 5870.

There was a good thread comparing both 5850 and 5870, stock for stock, overclocked vs stock and oced vs oced. 5870 turned up to be nearly 10% faster anyway, more shaders add to its value.

Ok, it makes more sense for me to get the 5870 anyway, over the GTX 470.

I need a cooler quiter card anyway, and thats the strength of the 5870 over the gtx 470.

Your saying I shouldnt base any of my judgements on tesselation performance, as tesselation isnt that common in games yet, and only benchmarks...

Iv currently got an ATI card, so I know what Im getting, everything the same just more power.

The question still remains, buy now or wait it out for the 6000 series to arrive.

From rumours I'v read it sounds like the low and mid range will be updated first in October, with the 6870 making an apperance in early January.

If this was true, then I get the 5870 with no hesitation. But some other rumours say that the 6870 may drop in October with the other cards in the 6000 range.....

Lets put it another way, for me upgrading from a 3870x2 to a 5870 is gona be a huge jump anyway?

The 5870 will be plenty of power to tide me over for the next 2 years at 1920x1200 resolution? Games like Crysis 2, Doom 4, Rage etc etc etc?

Yes, it's going to be a huge jump performance-wise. These games are going to be developed for consoles too, I wouldn't expect any high-end graphics card from current generation to under-perform TBH.
