Hi all
i got 10mbp installed from virgin over a month ago and have only just came up against an issue, when im gaming on crackdown speaking with my mate and doing campaign it basically kills the internet connection for the laptop.
The hardware im using is the netgear WNR2000 v2.
i've tried enabling QoS and putting the ethernet port im connected to to Low priority and www to highest but its still unable to be used.
Any ideas?

I don't have an Xbox so am a little unsure how the multiplayer works, but if you are hosting a game on it then the xbox can be using so much upload that it will max virgin medias quite limited upload speed. And the thing is, most stuff you do requires upload in some form, either sending webpage requests to a web server or sending an acknowledge packet etc... So if the xbox is maxing your upload then that will negatively effect lots of other things.

Again though, I don't use an xbox so I have no idea how some games do multiplayer, I only know it can be an issue for some games where a client has to host the game and has limited upload bandwidth available.

Using chat wont use anywhere near all of your upload bandwidth, sounds like a router problem but i dont see how you would be having problems due to large amounts of packets with a modern router.

He mentioned crackdown and I assume like other multiplayer xbox games that could be using a lot of upload when hosting a game. But like I said, I dont know much about xbox. An easy way to check would be to simply limit the upload speed of the xbox, which you may or may not be able to do depending on the capabilities of the router.

I host Gears of war2 some times and have the same 10mbps vigin line on direct cable (some times on wireless) but never had an issue. Wireless seems a bit slow to get things starting but only had lags very few times.

Have you checked your internet speed?

He said he was playing campaign and talking to his mate

Well then he should monitor all of the usual stuff when the issue happens, such as monitoring bandwidth usage (both upload and download), number of connections (incase something is flooding the router) etc..

ok just to update, my mate is hosting the game and im only able to connect via network cable to the router. I am unable to note the bandwidth used by the xbox 360 while playing the game.
i didn't expect they're to be a problem playing online and allowing my gf to browse the web on the laptop.
what i might try is another older DG834G v5 router i have at the weekend.
my internet connection is usually about 9mbp download and 0.5mbp upload.
what i am thinking is maybe i hit my upload cap during the day i was playing? as if i hit the upload cap it limits me to a crap 15-20KB a sec roughly doesn't it ?

It does limit you quite a bit but i would have thought that you would still have enough to browse the web and use your xbox (non hosting)
