Ok, please dont start by saying how many times have I asked the same question.

Yes, Iv asked it many times, but based on feed back, Im just getting confused.

Some say the 5870 is easily the better card, others say the 470 has better minimums.

I look at benchmarks and one benchmark shows the 470 competing and some times lossing to the 5850, other benchmarks show the gtx 470 making the 5870 look embarrased.

Look at these two benchmark reviews below. How can they possible tell two different stories? One is a review of the 460 (but it has results for the 470) and the other is a review of the HIS Icooler V 5870.

If there are any owners of the gtx 470 how care to tell me their experiences that would be great, I game at 1920x1200 resolution and will look to keep any new card for around 2-3 years, so it needs to have legs. (I do only have a crossfire motherboard however)

Thanks

Hi,

I bought a 5870 when I built my new PC but ended up selling it and getting a GTX 470. I much prefer the nvidia drivers, the control panel, custom game settings and better game support.

I had problems with antialiasing, shadows and generally poor performance is some games were the nvidia worked much better. Don't get me wrong the 5870 worked good in some games and it is a bit better in Crysis but overall I'm a lot more happy with the GTX 470.

As for heat and noise honestly while hotter and a little bit louder then the ATI it is not much worse than my old 8800 GT. If you have good case air flow it's not an issue.

I'd go for the 470 myself, with the prices as low as they are right now.

I personlly just don't trust ATI's driver support over Nvidia's, so another reason I'd go for the 470 over the 5870.

Scaling is really good on the 470's also if you go SLI at a later date.

Yeah, I have to say I'm getting a feeling of da ja vue every time I see your posts opethdisciple. :p

Er, nVidia need a medal for marketing, having people believe the GTX470 is competitive with the HD5870?

It's closer to the HD5850.

I thought the 470 was between the 5850 and the 5870 ? with the 480 just above the 5870 but below the 5970

Well, price wise it is much better than before...and that's probably the reason it got people thinking about it. You can now pick up a Zotac GTX470 with 5 years warranty for £235, whereas a 5870 is still around £275+ and with only 2 years warranty.

there needs to be a middle company where buyers don't have to justify their buys
(using ati fanboys and nvidia buyers because the ati users on here seem really ****y about it and give BS or biased evidence while most nvidia users go on a defensive route with primary evidence and don't accuse AMD of anything)

all the ati fanboys justify their buy with the secondary heat and noise, etc. argument which they read around the net and hear on the youtube videos where volume levels can differ hugely depending on many factors

and all the nvidia buyers justify their buy with primary evidence which they get from thoroughly testing and overclocking their cards

WoW he's still debating what card to get...

Ok let's sum the pros and cons of both cards up.

5870
Faster than the 470
Runs Cooler than the 470
Uses a lot less power than the 470 in idle and under load
Quieter than a 470
Is £45 more expensive than the 470

470
Slower than 5870
Uses more power than the 5870 in idle and under load
Runs hotter than the 5870
Is £45 cheaper than a 5870
Noisier than 5870

Now weigh things up, are the pros and cons above worth the extra £45 for the 5870.....hell yeah.

Ah I see, I thought the GTX470 was still around HD5870 pricing.

In which case, it comes down to how much you have to spend, much like the GTX460 vs HD5850 argument.

I can afford the 5870,l but some argue the GTX 470 has higher minimums.

I have to say driver wise, I can vouch for ATI drivers being a bit shoddy.

I get flashing textures BFBC2 and some sort of fireworks display over towns in the distance very rarly.

Also the 10.6 drivers, absolutly broke BFBC2. I was getting black screens with just the green objective markers, flashing etc.

It broke the crossfire on my 3870x2.
