One last time before I press the buy button, GTX 470 vs the 5870

One thing I like about Nvidia, is that they *seem* to come out with good performance drivers, such as the last two they released.

Where as ATI, we get the odd performance drivers now and then, but its mostly implementing features or bug fixing.

Do you think the 5870 still has performance left in the tank, which they will tweak?

No, its been out almost a year.
If they havent tweaked it yet then that shows how bad their drivers are.

I'd prefer a card that works all the time & is easy to use even if it meant 5 fps less then another card. Its better then having a card that performs 5 fps better but I have to hassle with the drivers all the time to achieve it. The 470 is between the 5850 and the 5870. But in my opinion the very small fps difference between the 5870 and the 470 is covered by the lower price tag & far more advanced/easy to use drivers.

WoW he's still debating what card to get...

Ok let's sum the pros and cons of both cards up.

5870
Faster than the 470
Runs Cooler than the 470
Uses a lot less power than the 470 in idle and under load
Quieter than a 470
Is £45 more expensive than the 470

470
Slower than 5870
Uses more power than the 5870 in idle and under load
Runs hotter than the 5870
Is £45 cheaper than a 5870
Noisier than 5870

Now weigh things up, are the pros and cons above worth the extra £45 for the 5870.....hell yeah.

LOL, thought you were going to have pros and cons for both cards?? Not a totally ATi biased "ATi pros = 4 cons = 1 and Nvidia pros = 1 cons = 4" c'mon you can do better than this surely??

You come out with posts like this, and you wonder why people think you're a total ATi zealot and then you have the audacity to take umbrage when they accuse you of it, it's beyond belief at times seriously.

Where's 3D vision, PhysX and Cuda? That's gotta count as at least one pro for the Nvidia side?

This guys been pondering what card to get for a while now, at least give him a more balanced review and not another load of total ATi biased bs?

Why not try and come up with five pros and five cons for each card, I'm sure an intelligent poster like yourself can come up with that :)

To the op, whatever card you get I'm sure you'll be very happy with it, both are top end cards and will not struggle at very high visual settings in the majority of the games that are out there right now.

What is so hard about using ATi drivers?

I've used NVs and ATIs and they're exactly the same in terms of user interactivity.

@coupe69

LoL he said he's not interested in cuda/physx/3D surround/eyefinity so why would I put them up as pros when they do not matter to him. Everything I posted is facts, something wrong with that?

Heh funny people you are. As always nvidia owners and biased annoying and aggressive. Nvidia owners we love you and we are happy your bought nvidia, yes last generations were good but for god's sake snap out of brand loyalty.

I'd say buy 470 since performance difference is not massive and you may save a few pennies on the way. Make sure you buy the one with a good cooler as zotac 470 is known for its loudness from the fan to keep those temps down.

If price between well cooled 470 and 5870 is not that big then I'd say go with 5870.

Personally never had problems with either nvidia or ati but I do a thorough clean of drivers before changing to another brand or even upgrading.

Also the 2 cards are good (although I'd recommend either 460 or 5850 coz overclocking them to 470/5870 speeds and saving another penny feels good) so you won't make a mistake buying either of them and if you don't like one you can always RMA it under the distance selling act.

Where in my post did I say you're lying :p Still looks awfully biased to me though, and where in this thread did the op state he was not interested in them?

Hey coupe do me a favor and run the below benchmarks on your 480 with an 800Mhz overclock, detail your fan speed and temps in game and don't BS :p cheers.

Dirt 2 benchmark @ 1680x1050 all max 4xAA

Just cause 2 concrete jungle benchmark @ 1680x1050 4xAA and disable the cuda water and that beok feature or whatever you call it. :p

OT, he said in some thread that he's not interested in them features, I'm sure he will confirm it again in here.

I had stated in another thread, that I wasnt interested in eyefinity or 3d stuff...

I feel Im to blame for this bickering which you guys can now stop.

I get it, both cards are good, and either will be good.

Is one better than the other? Maybe, hence why its £45 more. Simples

Anyway, the two cards in question is the chepo Zotac 470 and the chepo HIS 5870.

Physx was the only thing making me think I may try the Green side.

But I think for simplicity Im gona go with the 5870.

I havent missed physx so far, I still wont miss it.

The 5000 series have sold in bucket loads, and Nvidia shares ae down. That simple means the market has spoken! The 4000 and 5000 series have beaten the 200 and 400 series from Nvidia. No debate!

For this reason, and I have a crossfire mobo, and it runs cooler and its the top single ATI GPU, and Im familiar with ATI, I must go 5870.

Tbh I haven't trawled through the numerous threads the ops made, and he's created a few :D
