One last time before I press the buy button, GTX 470 vs the 5870

I had stated in another thread, that I wasnt interested in eyefinity or 3d stuff...

I feel Im to blame for this bickering which you guys can now stop.

I get it, both cards are good, and either will be good.

Is one better than the other? Maybe, hence why its £45 more. Simples

Anyway, the two cards in question is the chepo Zotac 470 and the chepo HIS 5870.

Physx was the only thing making me think I may try the Green side.

But I think for simplicity Im gona go with the 5870.

I havent missed physx so far, I still wont miss it.

The 5000 series have sold in bucket loads, and Nvidia shares ae down. That simple means the market has spoken! The 4000 and 5000 series have beaten the 200 and 400 series from Nvidia. No debate!

For this reason, and I have a crossfire mobo, and it runs cooler and its the top single ATI GPU, and Im familiar with ATI, I must go 5870.

If this is the case, will you now buy a 5870? and stop making new threads everyday asking the same questions?

It's not really that simple, so therefore it is debateable hence the constant bickering :p

I'm sure you'll be over the moon with your new purchase, cracking cards still the 5870 :)

Yeah they both using different benching techniques and maybe different levels, the techspot bench is actual gameplay recorded with fraps and not a flythrough so it's more representative of actual gameplay.

As I keep asking. Has ANY other reputable site managed to corroborate these results using similar testing methodology? Until then I do not think that it should be held up and used to downplay what has been found out by other well known and regarded sites, no matter how much you want to believe.

I'll not not bother pointing out they had to pull some early results because they were not doing like for like tests.... whoops

I get the general consensus here that gpu owners are like football fans, Blind loyalty even when things arent going so well, and thats on both sides, green and red!

I stopped slatting Nvidia many moons a go, and my experience with ATI has been stellar so no need to **** them off, I just picked up a 5970 and wish I did not as xfire is not my thing, so if I sell on it's either go Nvidia or pick a cheap 5850 up.

The card in question is this one:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-002-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502

According to the HIS website, it runs cooler and quiterthan stock cooler.

Cracking card, should do 950 on stock voltage as well.

WoW he's still debating what card to get...

Ok let's sum the pros and cons of both cards up.

5870
Faster than the 470
Runs Cooler than the 470
Uses a lot less power than the 470 in idle and under load
Quieter than a 470
Is £45 more expensive than the 470

470
Slower than 5870
Uses more power than the 5870 in idle and under load
Runs hotter than the 5870
Is £45 cheaper than a 5870
Noisier than 5870

Now weigh things up, are the pros and cons above worth the extra £45 for the 5870.....hell yeah.

All above are true but it hardly surprises me you suggested the 5870.

Lol, according to their site it may even fly, they'll try to sell their product by whatever seems appealing to you ;) afaik it is a good cooler though.

Really?

I probably need some help if I decide to over clock the card.

Some one told me that afterburner needs to run in the back ground.

Ideally, I would like to make my tweaks using after burner and never have to open the program again, and let the auto fan control take care of cooling.

Is that doable?

Depends if the cards bios has locked the cards overclocking potential to a set limit which is usually 900Mhz, if that is the case then you would have to run MSI do bypass that limit, I run MSI in the background 24/7 with no problems whatsoever.

But can I not just run the msi afterburner software, make my tweaks, save and closethe software, and every time I boot up the clocks are already set?

Or do I have to run afterburner for the tweaks to get set, every time I start the pc?

I dont run the catalyst control center by the way, I hate it!

Yeah it has to run in the background but once you have done your settings you won't have to redo then again, so you just let it do its thing in the background.

We will cross that bridge when we get to it I suppose.

Do you gain many frames from overclocking? Or is it fairly minimal?

Also does overclocking affect the fan noise much?
