washer dryers - any good?

Got a bosch washer/dryer, we use a rack to dry clothes as its so terrible at drying, the drum is to small to allow the clothes to separate enough to dry evenly.
Its been 100% reliable though in its defence.

They usually recommend taking half the load out before drying. Crazy but true. Dry the half you don't need soon on the rack and the half you do in the dryer. :)

I'm glad you asked this because I've been trying to make the same decision. I'm moving out in a couple of months and will need to buy all new electricals.
From what I've read on the internet so far, the washer dryers don't seem as effective (unless you buy a top of the range one) and they are not as energy efficient.
Luckily I have the space for separate units and as they'll probably be cheaper on the electricity I've decided to avoid the washer dryers.

Don't forget -
Buy German and stay away from Italian (Creda, Hotpoint, Indesit, Ariston)

Which brands are German?

I'll agree with this, me and my ex had an Ariston washer dryer (we had no space for separates and not outdoor space for drying).

I remember having them out to repair the sodding thing 4 times in the first year. I let her keep it when I left.

Another downside of washer/dryers is they actually use water while they're drying. They need to pump water through to cool the condenser (which much smaller then the one you'd find in a normal condenser dryer). I don't know how much they use, at the time it didn't bother me because we weren't on metered water.

I've recently moved into a flat where there is only room for a washer dryer. Problem is, is that it must be silver (or granite) to match the kitchen units. This seems to limit my options significantly to only a handful of machines, most of which have poor/mixed reviews. Anyone got any suggestions for a decent silver model?

The John Lewis washing machine we just bought (with the aforementioned three year warranty) is a Zanussi design modified for JL and built by Electrolux (in Germany)... Vorsprung der technik!!

If you have the room, go for separates because the dryer on combis isn't as good.

In addition, I don't trust the reliabilty of washing machines and dryers, so having both in one seems like a recipe for double the failure rate to me.

This. In my experience of selling said Appliance, Washer Dryers are the Least reliable type of Domestic Appliance. Buy only if you are pushed for room. I'd suggest buying a normal sized Washer & a small Tumble Dryer instead.
