Hey,

My dad wants to update his computer, as it's quite old now. It's got old parts from my system a few years ago :)

Intel 2140 1.6Ghz
Ati X1800XT
2Gb Ram

Basically he wants to spend £100 on a new processor and graphics card, can anyone recommend anything? I'm out of the loop at the moment..

Thanks

A lot depends how old his motherboard is, my old board you could only get a 2.3 Mhz CPU in. Better off spending another £50, and getting a mobo and a system case. With a few extra quid, you could better.

Have to ask the question what does he want for his money, what does his current not do. It may be that he can't get what he wants for that money.

Andi.

Well what ram has he got? DDR2? if so grab
Asus M4A78L-M LE AMD 760G (Socket AM3/AM2+) DDR2 microATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail-£46.99
Total :£93.98
Would be a lot faster than current setup and onboard gfx will be fine depending on what he wants to do.

Andicole0 makes a fair point.

I'm looking to do a budget build and settled on the asus M4A785G-M PRO so i could reuse 6 gig of ram i have laying around. I also settled on the Phenom II X2 555BE. This board has onboard graphics and is capable of unlocking cores so it's possible to get a tri or quad core from dual core CPUs.

Just a thought

His motherboard is ok, it's the OcUK P35 Socket 775 one they did a while ago, and yeah it's DDR2 ram.

He plays CoD MW, and recently bought Bad Company 2, which doesnt work. His 1800xt doesn't meet the minimum requirements, and after a google it seems it never will... something to do with the shaders.

I was just on the computer a minute ago, and it's so sluggish. It needs to be able to do general internet browsing, office things, gaming.

Thanks

IIRC the OCUK P35 boards were J&W ones which weren't too shabby at all, should be happy enough with a decent chip upgrade.

As to what to get I don't know sorry, just thought i would throw in the info above
