Long Haul Flights - Different classes of cabin

Premium economy on globespan before it folder on our trip to calgary was well worth the extra 25 quid. Got bigger seat more leg room, free headphones and it was seperated from economy which was packed like a tin. We had different movies aswell. Just seemed like a good deal for £25.

Insurance paid for our flights back due to my illlness but we got Air canada and that was awesome little pods to sit in fullscreen touch screens etc Would always go for premium as long as its quite a long flight.

I've always found Virgin to be great, flown Economy from LHR->LAX about a dozen times in the last couple of years, most recently in April and every time I've checked in on-line, dropped my bag off with normally a queue of 2-3 people ahead and no hassle and walked on the plane.

All the IFE has always been on-demand, which is a godsend for the long flights, although I usually take advantage of the free booze on offer and sleep most of the way.

I did fly PE too, we got it on a deal where it was £600 compared to £450 - was on our flight back after the wedding and really appreciated the extra seat room and pitch, the seats are really comfortable too :p And also the hold baggage allowance is doubled (I think) for PE which as we were bringing wedding presents and lots of things back it was great.

Check-in at LAX always sucks though, I don't think you can do it on-line, sometimes you can get lucky with security and waltz through but if there are other flights due around the same time it can be a pain. And the post-security terminal is rubbish too :p

Upper Class though frankly you must have money to burn, or air miles to burn, to do that compared to what you can buy once at your destination - that said I do have about 70,000 odd air miles with Virgin now so I think I could upgrade if I so wished :p

I still like singapore airlines desipte them not having PE. I've just booked my flights to Australia again and I also flew with them to Australia in 2009.

For an extra £30 per leg I can reserve an exit seat on an A380. This is leaps above what i'd see in Premium Economy. Seat width is just great, nothing in front of me for about 9 foot and a the doors on the A380 don't intrude into you space. I can get up, walk around and not have people bother me to get out.

On top of all this you can get on the very quiet top deck of the A380 and also the economy section of the top deck is only about 50 people, so naturally quiet anyway. All for an extra £30 per leg.

£700 to Australia on an A380 with the best exits seats is a bargain!

the silly thing is that royces had to "install" engine noise for the a380 engines since people were worried that they couldnt hear the engines. Source: derby rollsroyce.

You can check in online when you're flying home from LAX, I did :)

It's the world's crappest airport though. There's about 4 shops and not many places to sit, which really sucks when you're meant to turn up so early for your flight.

I was quite impressed with the VPort thing on my flight, although I had to have it rebooted once or twice cos I managed to crash it ;)

:p Yeah LAX is a funny one, it's just old and it shows - especially coming from Heathrow which has to be one of the best airports in the world really.

Meh, if you go to the crap areas of LA it will be crap, stay somewhere nice like Santa Monica and enjoy the beaches and take trips into Beverly Hills, Hollywood (althogh the realisation that Hollywood itself is not a glamorous area but a bit of a dive is new to most people) etc and it's pretty nice - I'm not a huge fan of LA it has to be said (San Diego is way nicer) but it has some nice areas. And god knows why you'd want to spend any time in a theme park but that's just me :p

Oh also Fox I remembered there's a Bubba Gump's Shrimp restaurant on Santa Monica pier which is cool if you fancied doing that on your first night :D

If you can catch me online with the time difference :p rich1lloyd at hotmail.com - feel free :)

I don't doubt they are great parks, and Six Flags too, I just can't stand all the queueing and crowds of people when 10 miles away there are epic beaches, scenery and surf to be catching :p If I could do a Cartmanland and have a park to myself I'd be much happier :D

Fox, you flown Virgin before?

Was about to book Air NZ to LA last week at a nice £516 now they shot up the other day to £580 now ****ing £615 today. Either I book now and clap myself for being a slow tard waiting for my unreliably slow mate or just go to Virgin for £500. Would have loved Air NZ and more legroom, but £100+ could go towards the rental and a lot more fun in LAs Vegas.

Argh!

Air NZ is good, but not £100 better than Virgin IMO - flew Air NZ once too in my various trans-Atlantic trips, it was pretty much identical from what I could remember although the plane looked a bit newer and the food was a little bit nicer, NZ lamb stew vs beef stew with Virgin :p

Cheers Rich.

I was mainly looking at the legroom to be honest, as I'm 6ft 2 and have lanky long legs. According to seatguru Virgin looks tiny with a 31 pitch and the ANZ 747 seemed one of the biggest.

Any other recommendations on carriers? Still shot myself in teh foot for not booking last week. Ho hum.

on the latest Thomson 767s you can set up a poker tiournament against other passengers on the IFE system :p
hmmm, this could prove fun, how can I tell if it's one of the latest? flying to Cancun from Manchester next week on a Thomson 767.
