Long Haul Flights - Different classes of cabin

Fox, you flown Virgin before?

Yes, in 2005. I remember it being a bit average.

Was about to book Air NZ to LA last week at a nice £516 now they shot up the other day to £580 now ****ing £615 today. Either I book now and clap myself for being a slow tard waiting for my unreliably slow mate or just go to Virgin for £500. Would have loved Air NZ and more legroom, but £100+ could go towards the rental and a lot more fun in LAs Vegas.

I wanted Air NZ as they are the best on that route but the timings put me off in the end, they only have one return flight a day and it leaves LAX at 16:00. By the time you've checked in etc etc basically, that day is pretty much only for flying home.

Whereas Virgin have a 21:10 meaning you pretty much get a full day before heading off to the airport at about 6pm.

PE is designed for people who want to have more leg room and feel a bit more special, but cannot afford Business Class.
The 3 Class system makes perfect sense and I see no reason to change it.
Some airlines drop First Class on some routes as there is simply no demand.

As for being on the upper deck on a 747, yes it's much quieter but whether you can go upstairs depends on the airline.
On BA's old 747s a few years ago, they still had economy seating on the upper deck, and First at the very front.

Singapore Airlines has First Class at the front of 747s iirc, so that the passengers get to sit in rows 1-3.
Some have it on the upper deck, it just depends.

Business Class is well worth it, and PE can't get anywhere near it in my opinion.
The lounge access is brilliant, especially on connecting long haul flights, as you can have a shower and freshen up.

What's the best is when you buy a dirt cheap economy ticket, and upgrade using miles or upgrade vouchers.
I flew to Singapore last October for €340. Upgraded to business for free.
It was LH though, who aren't anything special, but it was still nice to have a flat (if not horizontal, and far too complicated) bed.

The price of some of these flight's you guys are quoting is mad :D

2.5k Thailand? :o I paid just over £400 with Etihad and they supply a great service, infact looking now they are offering flights for £418 in Ocotober :D
Few years ago I'd have said the same when I was doing lots of long-haul flying to visit my girlfriend, and found I simply couldn't sleep in economy and night flights were simply hell.

I did 20 hrs traveling on 2hrs sleep on tiny cramped planes (Continental 767/757s), not fun at all.

When I was booking my recent flights to Bangkok it was about £900 for economy, £1650 for premium and £2.4k for business (BA), mad prices whichever way and no reward availability (and I had to go on X dates) so I went for the business option. No way I was doing 12hr night flights in economy, and equally I thought £1650 for premium was a rip-off but the business price wasn't too bad in comparison - only £375 extra each way for all the extra benefits - so you can see how premium is the most profitable cabin for airlines.

I had to work each side of my flights, work a bit on arrival, and also get as much holiday time as possible. So that's a good 3 days or so gained which as director of a time-sensitive company getting precious little time off was definitely worth £1500. And of course smugly sipping champers while the cattle boarded past us :p (kidding)

Of course if I didn't have to work, and didn't care about being tired, I'd have put up with economy hoping I could get the extra legroom seats tho for me it doesn't matter much as I'm a shortie anyway and simply can't sleep on a plane unless I'm lying down. I've tried free booze, and sleeping pills just make me even more tired!

My brother is teasing me no end though as he's flying tin can airlines via Mumbai or somewhere but then it's only costing him £350 return so he has a point :p

I pay around 150 gbp for first or business and about the same again in taxes. Unless I had money to burn I would not pay full fare for it. Sure economy is pretty hellish on a long flight and it really is great to get a flat bed with cabin crew bring you tea and all sorts of nice things, but I don't think 7 hrs of my life is worth me spending 3K. Obviously my view is pretty skewed since I have always had airline staff travel.

Who do you work for?

£150 + taxes for a First Class ticket seems a bit too good to be true..

I can get a return business class ticket to anywhere in the US for £250. It's standby though, which sucks. £150 + tax is doable.

Does NATS have deals with particular airlines?

Most airline staff tickets are standby. But I can't imagine First Class is always full.
Pretty sweet deal, just curious which airline it is, if it is an airline..

NYNY is a great fun hotel, the rooms are clean but a tadge dated ( my Vegas standard, they are standard UK 4* )

I hear folks moaning that if in the Skyline rooms the rollercoaster keeps you awake until midnight
