Hi guys,

I'm in a bit of a bind as to what GTX 460 to go for. I am leaning towards the MSI, but then I stumbled across this Gainward GS (not the GS-GLH) and the 1GB Gigabyte GTX 460 OC. All three are priced very similarly, but I'm struggling to find lots of information on the Gainward and Gigabyte.

So I was relying on some of you guys to shed some light in regards to what would be the better choice! Budget is ideally around the £180-190 mark.

What are your thoughts/input?

Cheers.

The twin fans on the Gigabyte look nice, I wonder if their noisy and actually do their job properly! The Gigabyte is cheaper but does the fact its been pre-overclocked (715MHZ) mean it will affect its overclockability if I wanted to dabble with OC'ing it?

How about an HD 5850?

Close to the performance of an overclocked 460 for a similar price.

If you get an asus or MSI one they will clock much further too and go onto a different league of performance.

I thought 5850's were quite a bit dearer and only just out perform a 460; and not in every test either! What 5850 would you recommend?

Edit: Where are these £195 5850's people keep mentioning? lol Can't find 'em!

If you're going to go for a GTX460, wouldn't it be better to get a stock one and overclock, saving money?

Of course, an HD5850 is the best card for around £200, overclock one of those and you're looking at HD5870 speeds.

If I could get one of those "rare as hen's teeth" reference voltage tweakable 5850's for £190-200 I'd get one. But they don't exist.

So I'll (probably) get the Gigabyte 1GB OC for £180+ which DO exist!

Yeah, I think I will go for the Gigabyte OC tbh. Overclock it slightly. I also kind of like the fact the 460 is new, whereas a 5850 is what, nearly a year old? Obviously that's just me being silly but I would kind of prefer something new!

PS. Waiting for a certain company to get the Gigabyte OC in stock! Grrr!

In a nutshell.

Gainward = Same as Palit, which have terrible cooling and are loud as hell.

MSI = Much improved cooling, well built, much better noise wise, good overclocker.

Gigabyte = Bit of a mystery as no one actually has one yet. But from rumours around the internet they look like they should be good.

nath wraith im not convinced tbh...the cooling is not 'ideal' and the gainward and palit pcb are virtually identical as palit build them in the same factory (and neither are reference) they just have a different branded cooler on them do they not#/

seems to go against what owners of the cards have reported in the GTX460 owners thread.

where the cards have been accused of not being the same as review samples, and are offensive to the ears.

I'm sorry this is totally wrong. The Gainward cards and Palit cards are not identical, nor is either card loud or has terrible cooling.

Oh really. Other than the shroud shape the actual cooler, PCB, and fan is exactly the same on both cards. Gainward is actually part of the Palit brand.

Lets have a look shall we:

Wow... yeah, they are TOTALLY different.

Also having used the Palit I can tell you the GPU block is EXACTLY the same as the one pictured on the Gainward.

Also having used the Palit AND the MSI I can tell you that the Palit fan IS loud, IS whiny, and IS annoying.

While the MSI fan is inaudible, no fan whine at all, but you can hear the whoosh of air under load, however it is NOT annoying in the slightest and easily blends in with ambient case noise.

They are now owned by the same people, identical cards.

Both had the issue with review units having VRM cooling and retail units not.
