Asus Ares review at Bit-Tech

Should they buy 2xGeForce 480GTX instead? I don't care tbh, there's always been a hardware that only a few people can afford to buy for the extra 10% in performance.

Just goes to show that the standard 5970 is such good value for money, pretty much the same performance for a fraction of the cost.

I just checked the review and I thought it would be a dual GTX 480 card so was quite surprised that it's just a 5970 :(

But sports cars aren't £1000. These threads pop up all the time regarding expensive hardware. If you take home £60,000 per year then a £1k graphics card is cheap. It's a 3 year investment. I have a friend who bought a Louis Vuitton wallet, because he's a tart.

While a £500 GPU is overkill for almost everyone, like a £10 wallet out of River Island, some tarts will pay a premium for the name, regardless of the function.

wont be obsolete in 6months time, so thats a terrible comparison.

Maybe not but cost of ownership is more.

My boss had an Aston Martin Vanquish and he lost £30k in 6 months ownership or approx £37 per mile travelled.

Equally his Lamborghini Mercialago lost £60k in 15 months having only covered 3000 miles so only £20 per mile travelled.

I used to tease him when he travelled one mile each way to the local garage to buy fags when he had run out and only bought one packet as they were so much more expensive at the all night garage than the supermarket and he was not amused when I pointed out his £6.32 packet of fags were costing him £80.32 each time. :D

And also my boss has just installed his 2nd and 3rd cinema systems (one 10m outdoor one and one 4m indoor in the swimming pool) at a cost of £40K+ so £1000 on a graphics card is nothing tbh.

No, but depreciation will be thousands of pounds.

If I was rich I would also buy one, just to have a play with it.

But a 300k sports car can do 0-60 in 4 seconds maybe, and will go round a private race track ridiculously faster than a Honda Civic, it costs more but its significantly faster with significantly more expensive parts, significantly higher costs to produce and you get a significantly better car.

An Ares is no more than 2x5870's, literally nothing more at all, it doesn't cost more than 2x5870's to make, it isn't faster than 2x5870's, and its not better in any way. What you mean to say is, one guy bought a Honda Civic for £15k, and another guy bought one for £30k, because it had a £50 air vent stuck on it and painted with metalic paint, only douchebags would buy a £15,5k Civic for £30k, over a normal one at £15k.

Its not a name, the name is Asus, or AMD, and both of those are available in identically performing cheaper setups which will likely overclock better and cost massively less.

Also yes, your friend is an idiot for spending silly money on a wallet for a name, thats the point everyones making.

As for an investment over 3 years, rubbish, in 3 years a Ares will be awful, in games and compared to new cards, it will be replaced by 6970's within 6 months, maybe less. You could buy 2x5870's for the same performance now, AND probably buy a 6970 in 6 months for the SAME cost as an Ares, which means you'd get significantly better performance over that time for the same cost. Also an Ares in 3 years, will be worth £50 second hand, in 6 months 2x 5870's will probably be sellable for at least £300. In 6 months an Ares will NOT sell for more than a new 6970, which at maybe £450, or maybe 2x 6850's for £400, will mean you'd be lucky to get more than £300 for the Ares second hand.

Its awful, in every possible way you look at it, horrible investment, its not cheap, it offers nothing over cheaper alternatives. The only people that will buy it are idiots who think a £150 wallet is better than a £10, just because its expensive.

I do agree that value for money it isn't. However, they are only making or will sell only a limited number and although they won;t cost anymore than two 5870's to make, they will cost a lot more in research and design.

And equally there is silliness in the car world. Quite often you see a new version of a high performing car released which weighs 100kg less and is a fraction of second quicker but carries a £20k premium over the regular model. They never make sense to me either.
