Asus Ares review at Bit-Tech

Since when is this forum about value for money anyway ?

That happened about when the 3870 & 8800gt hit and ATI announced there value for money initiative. Since then the criteria seems to be heat, noise, frames for you pound and or preference to a particular make.

Thinking back it has been this way since I can remember, certainly as far back as the gf2/gf3 ti and r8500. I think more recently, with the way everything is (economy etc) value for money is certainly more important.

Was in a shop in Tottenham Court Road W1, and they had this card on show...I asked the guy, who brought it over, it ways a ton, and the metal breif case that comes with it, looks better than the card...But not for me..

Fair enough but it annoys me the way some people on these forums instead of offering advice, decide to rant and criticize peoples buying choices. It is an enthusiasts forum afterall and people if they want should be able to indulge themselves without coming up against the 'you should have bought an ati 5850' brigade. That seems to dominate discussions lately. And while sometimes geniune advice is being offered especially with value for money sometimes I get the feeling people want to defend their buying choices at any cost.

Totally agree, personally I have no real preference, if somebody wants to go nuts then who am I to tell them no. The 5850 is a good card there is no arguing with that, for a long time it had no real competition in its price range and was quick enough. These things tend to stick even if there is now an equal/better option in the 460/470.

Its swings and roundabouts mate, when the 8800gt was about it was a monster in its price range and had pretty much the same forum following as the 5850 now. Every ATI thread at the time was basically “buy an 8800gt” and at the time this was because it was faster and equally as cheap as the ATI equivalent.
