After the price reductions in a few weeks im wondering if this is going to be the new sweet spot for cpus?

Im in the market for a cpu/board/ram upgrade ( approx £600-£700 ) and im very tempted to wait for this cpu to appear on the ocuk listings.

Ive asked on the product suggestions forum but so far no answer... so do you think they will take over as the new 920?

General stuff... games, encoding movies etc.

I know the 930 is the current daddy but if the 950 comes down in price to almost the same isnt it going to be the better purchase?

After some reading up on google it seems a better chance of a good overclock from the 950.

The higher stock speed could also sway people who dont want to overclock or are scared to :p

Is the 950 coming down in price? I thought the price cuts were already done. Are you looking at building a whole new system, what will your budget be?

Apparently its down by a good 45% end of august.

4.2 Ghz is enough yes, but is 4.2ghz a 100% cast iron overclock on a 930? or is the 950 a better bet.

I dont know thats why im asking :p

And im keeping the rest of the rig in my sig, so just cpu ram and mainboard for 600-700 bearing in mind i want the BEST for the money and yes i know new intel gear is out next year but im sick of waiting.

"According to Chinese website HKEPC, Intel is planning a handful of price cuts this summer, the most compelling of which is headed towards the Core i7 950. Come August 29, Intel will slash the Core i7 950 from $562 all the way down to $294, effectively replacing the Core i7 930, HKEPC says."

Not bad news at all, I'm well tempted. I know I've been waiting since december 2009 for the new sandy kit, I'm really going crazy here still another good half a year minimum.

Exactly my point.

If i really pushed i could maybe afford a 6 core but thats really overkill for me. My GTX275 will do for now, i will upgrade the graphics card next year when the ati refreshes happen.

Hexacore, wow bud, you're pushing it. Would you really spend £800 on just a cpu.

you are not going to be able to do over 4.2 on a bloomfield chip without some serious watercooling.

this renders any bloomfield other than a 920/930 useless.

the current retail 930s that we have in at OcUK are truely excellent cpus. im hitting 4.2/4.3 on every one of them with no issues

yep, be fine mate :)

Even on a 920 you can overclock to 4.2ghz using turbo mode before you will start overclocking the RAM
