Has anyone else had one of these? How did you find it?

I had sedation and cant remember a thing about it! I didnt fancy having it without - Quite an experience!

They discovered I have a hiatus hernia :(

I had one when I was about 12 or something, under general anaesthetic.

Also had a barium meal x-ray. That sucked. Had a fairly unpleasant dump after that, as I recall.

Had a few for my colitis, hurts like **** when they inflate the colon, I had no sedation, MTFU.

That would be a colonoscopy.

I've had both, the gastroscopy is by far the most unpleasant experience....swallow this hose pipe and then attempt to vomit for 15 mins until they finally gave me the sedation to put me out!

Colonoscopy was much more manageable, a little uncomfortable and the "prep" wasnt overly pleasant but the actualy procedure was fine.

I've had two different tubes into my stomach before I was diagnosed with achalasia:

1) A fairly sizeable tube into the mouth, down the throat. Very, very unpleasant. The worst is the initial 'swallow this badboy', especially as I had my throat numbed. Once it is in, it isn't so bad, just the infrequent feeling of needing to vomit.

2) A tube like a thick piece of spaghetti, up my nose, down the throat. That was to measure how well my stomach reacted to drinking the odd sip of water through the straw. I also burped in the face of the person pulling out said tube. (Happens frequently, apparently!)

Neither were pleasant; both vastly more pleasant than not being able to eat properly and regurgitation every meal...

1 is the gastroscopy or OGD

2 is a nasogastric tube

Never be conned into the throat spray, midazolam is the way forwards, you won't remember a thing, it's great what some people will say afterwards too :D

The throat spray was alright actually. If I had to have it done again, I was happy to have it numbed and walk out once the procedure was over.

In some ways, the nasogastic tube was the worst. I hate the feeling of anything coming from my nose to the back of my mouth/throat.

I had the colonoscopy and the gastroscopy both with no sedation or gas and air striaght after one another. Drinking the pickleaxe is the worst. Poo'ing every 10-15mins, done my head and bum in. The doctor turned around and said to me, your rectum is a bit inflamed! I turn around and said to one of the nurses, his would be if he had to wipe it 20 times a day for two days!!!!!!

Had it done at 4:30 and was at work for 6 for a 12 hour shift. Ate a massive pizza after i was finished!

Had one while awake. It's a bloody unpleasant experience, would not want to have it again. Lucky they didn't find anything obviously wrong with me.
OP, don't worry too much, they can fix HH with keyhole surgery these days. :)

I've had about 5 colonoscopys over the past 3 years due to colitis, I've actually got on next tuesday. After having the first one without sedation and it being the most painful experience of my life, I now always opt for the sedation and quite enjoy them as the feeling of fading away is lovely.

The worst part is definitely the prep beforehand though, it tastes vile and leaves me with a more painful arse than usual.
