Can't install ATI drivers?

Just updated drivers on an old PC, Athlon Mobile, 9800pro, 3gb ram, Win XP pro.

Can't for the life of me get any ATI drivers to install. I've tried every driver from 9.12 up to 10.7 and always get the same issue that the actual driver does not appear to install anywhere.

I've uninstalled everything before a new install and also run driver sweeper.

Can't find a fix that works for this I just can't seem to get the drivers onto the PC, looks like it a fairly common issue from Google but nothing seems to work.

Its driving me insane.

You cant install 10.7 with that card.

AMD has moved a number of DX9 ATI Radeon™ graphics accelerators products to a legacy driver support structure. This change impacts Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux distributions. AMD has moved to a legacy software support structure for these graphics accelerator products in an effort to better focus development resources on future products.

You are limited to 10.2

Gonna keep bumping as I'm still getting no joy.

10.2 installed ok but then I get a black screen for a login page as before although if I uninstall the drivers it boots ok but with crappy gfx performance obviously.

No help to be found on the AMD forums either.

Did you use driver sweeper to remove all parts of the 10.7 driver that the uninstaller didn't remove? I suggest you remove the drivers and run sweeper in safe mode, then re-try 10.2 again.

Uninstalled everything and ran driver sweeper in safe mode, reinstalled 10.2 and still get the same problem. Don't have VS installed.

Would a rebuild fix this? probably less time than I've spent already trying to fix the problem!

driver sweeper kills ATI driver installs dont use it. Go back to an early 8 driver and try again.

Driver Sweeper wipes the .inf file from windows needed for ATI driver installs.
try uninstalling the ATI driver and getting your card recognised as a standard VGA driver, boot to safe mode and install the ATI driver.

I had this problem a while ago in the end i just had to re-install windows. Driver sweeper can cause more problems than it fixes sometimes.

Ok. This has gone rather odd.

Have done a completely clean re-install of XP. Nothing else added. I still get a black screen on boot up after the windows logo graphic and can't see the login page. Will boot into Safe mode ok.

I've tried 3 monitors so its not that. If the gfx is borked would it still show safe mode?

I've reinstalled the OS twice just in case and still get the same issue.

Can't figure this one out at all.

Did you format-reinstall or just reinstalled on top? If the latter then perhaps configuration files have been left over and create the problem you have? (long shot I know..). If the former then I have no idea!

No, I formatted before the install but thanks anyway. Going to have another look at the BIOS later to see if I can spot anything.

Finally got this sorted.

It seems the issue was with the dual channel aspect of my mobo, while the PC would see the memory it caused the error as all three slots on the mobo had memory in.

In the short term I have just installed 2x1gb in the dual channel slots which supports 200fsb, on investigation it appears to add the 3rd 1gb stick I need to back the fsb down to 166. Going to fiddle with that and see what happens but at least I know what the problem was.

Thanks for all the tips.

On my old s754 system, which was single channel memory, if you used all 3 slots the
memory had to run at 166. Had loads of crashes forcing it to 200, until I realised this!
