hi
i am noel, 31 from co.tyrone ni

i have gone as far as i can with air, and i need liquid to keep my cpu and gpu cool
however i need some friendly people to help and advise me on my selected componets, and for compatibility of
these components

my system specs are

CASE - Antec Twelve Hundred
Power Supply - Antec CP-850
Motherboard - Asus P5E64 WS Evolution Intel X48 (Socket 775)
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad QX9770 3.2GHZ 1600FSB
Memory - Patriot 8GB PC3-12800 (1600MHz) 7-7-7-20 XMP
Windows HD - OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II SSD
Games HD - X2 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache Raid0
Graphics Card - ASUS Nvidia GTX - NOT YET PURCHASED, CURRENTLY RUNNING ASUS ATI HD 4890
Sound Card - Creative X-Fi Titanium Soundcard
Blu Ray Drive - LG CH10LS20 10x BluRay-ROM
DVD RW SATA - LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter
Operating System - Windows XP 64 Bit

i have been reading forums for about a month now, and i know some basics
but i guess you only learn by doing, and trial and error

this is my second build, and i use it for gaming on directx 9 games and below

ok here are my selected water cooling components so far

Coolant - Koolance Liquid Coolant High-Performance 700mL Fluorescent Blue
Reservoir - Laing DDC Dual Bay* Multi Fascia Reservoir ONE - XSPC
Pump - 12V Laing DDC-1T+ Ultra 18W (MCP355)w/XSPC V3 Acetal Pump Top
CPU Water Block - EK-Supreme HF Nickel
Water Block Fittings - EK-PSC Fitting 10mm - G1/4 Nickel X4
WCUK 480mm Quad Radiator Stand - Black

(1) i need help selecting a radiator - which will probably be outside my case as i know the 1200 is not so good for w/c due to little space to work with

(2) also i will need, fan controller/fans/clips/tubing and other bits and bobs recommendations please

Hi Noel

i see you have selected a quad rad stand...

excellent

Black Ice SR1 480mm or a thermochill pa 120.4 are the best to go for.

change your pump to a D5 with a decent top [bitspower/EK etc] and you will need a good res to feed it properly and keep flow rate consistant.

get either gentle typhoon fans or sharkoon 2000rpm silent eagles. and put them on a fan controller that has enough headers. if you want to run them on molex get the 1000rpm sharkoons as they will do the job. [means no need for a fan controller]

it doesnt look like you have enough fittings. you need two for every component in your loop. the tubing needs to be the sise to match this.

I would just go for distilled/deionised water and use blue tubing rather than get that fluid, then use PT Nuke and a silver coil to control any algae etc, be a lot cheaper in the long run.

Also, your buying a rad stand but you won't be able to use it as its made to mount rads horizontally inside a case. You will need to look at the swiftech rad box to mount of the back of your case.

Otherwise spec list looks good, nice choices in there.

Are you going to use barbs or compression fittings? this will obviously impace the tubing you use. There is little difference between the different size tubing, martin @ skinneelabs has a review showing the differences between them and its very little.

Fans I would go for 1600rpm myself and use the fan controller to run them slower. Fan controller go for one that will match your build where possible, double check how much power it can supply per channel if your planning on putting multiple fans on one channel or running high powered fans

edit: beaten like a ginger step child :p

Buy a Dremel, lock urself in the garage, GO CRAZY !! :D

You'll be amazed what fits afterwards

Personally I would never trust ANY dyed fluid, especially blue, based on Feser One stories. They MAY be ok these days but I would always go with coloured tubing instead.

You don't need the XSPC V3 pump top if you are going with that reservoir. That reservoir is effectively a pump top in itself.

Pump will stand you in good stead for expansion.

Water block is one of the best.

You will need 3/82 ID 1/2" OD tube with those compression fittings. Don't forget you will need fittings for the rad as well.

Radwise, since you say you want to cool your gpu at some point you will want to spec at least a 120.3 rad from the start. I would always reccomend the Thermochill as that is all I have experience of. These are suited to low speed fans which is useful if the rad is being mounted outside the case.

I'd scrap the water cooling idea, it would be better to just get an i7 + mobo + card + windows 7

this would give you a bigger boost than overclocking the QX9770 which will only be slightly more than air cooled, with the i7 it will be quite a lot better

rjkoneill thanks for you advice

(Black Ice SR1 480mm) or (thermochill pa 120.4) - i will read reviews and select one.

change your pump to a D5 with a decent top - can you explain what a (top) does on a pump
i cannot fiqure that out.

the reservoir i selected (Laing DDC Dual Bay Reservoir ONE) will fit in 2 5.25 drive bays,
but do you think its not a good one ?

gentle typhoon fans or sharkoon 2000rpm silent eagles - i will check these out, also
i will be getting a fan controller - what size of fan does the above rads use i am guessing 120mm
am i right ?

Water Block Fittings - EK-PSC Fitting 10mm - G1/4 Nickel (X6) 2 for gpu block, 2 for cpu block, 2 for rad

i will be getting 10mm tubing

PaulyD thanks for you advice

would Koolance Liquid Coolant (Fluorescent Blue) be ok since this is my 1st w/c attempt,
and Koolance fluid has algae control and anti corrosion, and i read good reviews about it
it would save me time and hassle as i can not get hold of distilled water

that fan bracket is of my list
i have found a rad stand on ebay it is external but expensive - it holds the rad vertical - am i
allowed to post a link to it, so you guys can run a expert eye over it ?

PaulyD i will be using these fittings - EK-PSC Fitting 10mm G1/4 Nickel

OCD-OC
i have a dremel but i am not hurting my 1200 :)

Bubo thanks for you advice

Personally I would never trust ANY dyed fluid, especially blue - my heart is set on blue fluid so i can
watch it flow through tubing and blocks, plus it looks really cool - should i forget this and get
blue tubing instead ?

You will need 3/82 ID 1/2" OD tube - i will get this tubing

HW91

this build is more than powerfull for the 100 + (directx 9 games) that i have, plus
xp gives me the compatibility for these games, some are really old

if it's more than powerful enough then why bother spending so much on it?

it's like putting £200,000 towards a nissan micra

i want to w/c this build so i can oc my qx9770 to 3.8ghz and keep it cool - plus the gtx 480 is really hot so it needs to be under water.
HW91 i was thinking of getting a Zalman Reserator XT at first but ppl in forums were saying that it was crap, and it would cost more than builing my own custom w/c setup

was just thinking a bit about this, you'll have to pay a bit more though

1) get dual 460's or 470's instead of the 480 +£70 or + £160
2)next two can be changed around
a) Buy the cheapest i7 cpu + mobo + £370
b) sell the QX9770 for ~£300 and mobo for £60-80 -£360-380 which covers the new cpu setup pretty much
3) get a Black Ice 420 GTS instead of the 480, it'll cool the components and should save you about £20 -£20

that's only a bit more for what I'd consider a good bit more powerful PC

Koolance Liquid Coolant High-Performance 700mL Fluorescent Blue X2
Laing DDC Dual Bay Multi Fascia Reservoir ONE - XSPC
12V Laing DDC-1T+ Ultra 18W (MCP355)w/EK V2 DDC X-TOP Rev2- Plexi
ThermoChill PA120.4 - 480 Radiator (15mm)
CPU Water Block - EK-Supreme HF Nickel
3/8" ID - 1/2" OD Hose - Clear/UV Blue
Akasa AK-FC-03 Fan Controller Pro
Scythe Kaze Jyuni 1900RPM Slip Stream 120mm Fan X4

1 - ok i need someone to tell me if the pump will fit inside the Reservoir
2 - should i use barbs or compression fittings
3 - what size fittings should i get ?

Hi Noel,
1. Yes pump fits into a space under the res so it doesnt take up any space ( hope that makes sense )
2. I built my 1st system with cheap barbs and jubilee clips. it worked fine with no leaks, but I have just changed all the ones you can see to compressions cos they look nicer and I am more confident they wont leak. But I couldnt find enough compression fittings anywhere for sale so I also used a couple of bitspower barbs. These were much better than the cheaper ones cos they had more teeth to grip the pipe.
3. I am no expert, but if you are buying 3/8 hose, you want 3/8 fittings to match !! I used the same size and I am happy.

hi tim
thx for giving me advice

the (Laing DDC Dual Bay Multi Fascia Reservoir ONE) is hollow underneath so the pump tucks up into it, is that what you mean ?

you said about the compression fittings, look nicer and are more secure - i will definitely use those

3/8" ID - 1/2" OD Hose 10mm - can someone confirm the fitting size i need

yep
they screw into hollow in the case

you only need the ddc pump not an acrylic top, maybe before ordering put up some pix to confirm what you finalise on ?
I dont think these were available a couple of weeks ago, but I think they are what you want ..

looks good, although if you're paying extra for the EK top version, don't bother because you'll be taking the top off anyway
