My 400D has started playing up, when you turn it on it just says ERR99 - Turn off blah blah. Have tried different batteries, lenses, grip (3rd party) and the only way it will work is if I turn it on holding down the JUMP button.
Any ideas? Does it need a service, and if so where is the best place to get it serviced?

Stolen from the web ...

"Try cleaning the electrical contacts on both the lens and the camera. A problem here usually gives the very general warning "err99". This should fix things for you. You can even try another lens as the first thing you do and if it works then you know it's the original lens. But if it does not work, don't be put off as it may also be dirt on your electric contacts on your camera body at this point. Clean all the contacts on your camera lens mount and also clean all the contacts on all your lenses.

Some use a pencil eraser and gently rub the contacts, or you can use a clean, lint free cloth lens cloth and maybe a little lens cleaning solution on it. Just rub the contacts with the damp cloth, not for too long. Wipe dry both the camera and lens contacts and check your results.

Other reasons for err99 are trying to achieve auto focus too close, at least that had happened to me with some at least one lens. Another reason in my experience was using an older chipped sigma lens that need's a new chip to work with current eos bodies. These 30yr old lenses still work but only at the wide open aperture, changing the aperture to anythiung else and you get err99. Canon , I belive lists many reasons for the gerneral err99 so do not worry to much.

As above, try cleaning the electrical contacts around the lens mount. Drawing on them with a graphite pencil can also work if you can't just do it with a bit of tissue.

I'll dig out a link for err99 when at home tonight. I had it on my 40D. For me it was the contacts between lens and camera were dirty on camera side. Not visible to human eye but as the error persisted between different lenses I knew it was the body.

Unfortunately Canon are moving away from specific error codes to using Err99 for pretty much any error which makes things difficult to diagnose.

Have you tried removing the backup watch battery as well as the main one (should be inside the main battery compartment)? Leave it out for a few minutes to clear the camera back to the factory defaults and see if that makes any difference.

Done that, it asks me to enter the date etc. on turning it, works fine until next time I power it on and then says ERR99 again...

Right, tis sorted...
What it actually was in the end were the contacts for the grip in the battery compartment. Cleaned them with a pencil eraser and problem has gone!!!! This hasn't been mentioned on the numerous posts etc. that I have googled, but as I'd cleaned everything else, I decided to give it a go...

well it was, ERR99 is back again...DOH!

How old is it, 3dcandy? Even if its totally OOW, you should be able to get someone to have a look at it (official canon servicer) for about £50...

Just sent mine in for shutter replacement after getting error99, they have waived £150 ish fee for replacement despite it being just out of warranty as it had only done 5K photos
