Hi guys,

Sorry for a similar post (as i raised on last week) but i have been scratching my head on what to get.

I have an older 775 based machine with 4gb ram, and supports SLI (even though i have no real intention of buying two cards). I originally had my heart set on a GTX460 - but im glad i waited. i looked at all the threads and it seemed a lot of the early releases were having cooling or noise issues due to manufacturers not using referance cooling solutions.

Have read all the reviews under the sun in regards to both cards, and well i think ive gone partially insane from reading so much. it seems fairly balanced, with maybe the 5850 being a little quicker, but then thats not taking any OC into consideration

However, the Nvidia Card that takes my eye is the MSI OC 1GB Cyclone, which as i can gather has less noise/heat issues and is OC'd slightly at stock

So if you were me, what would you get - I will be running games at 1900 x 1200 as i have one 24" Widescreen Monitor!?

1.) ATI 5850 (PowerColor or VTX Model) at £194
or
2.) Nvidia GTX460 1gb OC (MSI Cyclone) at £185

I can see pros and cons on both cases

Pros for 5850
-A faster clock speed at stock
-A much better cooling design Exhausting heat
- A looks like a more mid-high range card than the 460

Pros for 460
- Physx
- Is it faster as its pre-oc'd ?
- Much, Much newer more performance boosts to be expected?

Looking at reviews dont seem to help, the 5850 and the 460 seem to trade blows in games, depending on the game, and wether AA is applied.

With the 460 biting the ankles of the 5850 it seems the prices now are pretty even with each 1gb variant.

So peeps, im going to have to throw this one back to you. what would you choose? and more importantly... why!?

The 5850 for £194. Probably the best £9 you will spend IMO.

Well, see thats the thing - ive always been an nvidia fanboy, but the ati5850 does look good, but then the 460 is also looking promising. im not considering the 460 to save money, its is purely about what is the better card for the money?!?

If it was between a stock 768Mb 460 and the 5850, the 5850 would win. but a oc'd from stock 460 and a 5850 seem much closer... what would be your reason for the 5850 ?

At that price the HD5850 is the better buy, both can be overclocked and there are claims a GTX460 can reach almost GTX470 speeds and a HD5850 can match a HD5870 but take that with a pinch of salt. If the GTX460 were £15 cheaper IMO it would be the better but as it stands the HD5850 ticks all the boxes in terms of performance, heat, noise etc.

+1 for the 5850 - in this game it doesnt pay to be a fanboy on either side of the fence, so often does the game change - you just wind up cutting off your nose, yada yada yada.

5850 at stock is on par with an overclocked 460 for the most part, therefor I would go with a 5850 and if you feel the need for more performance you can clock it, most will do 5870 clocks and at that speed it will leave the OC 460 in the dust. Of course if you want physx then go with a 460 but I always go with the faster card and not so much substandard features.

Overclock the 5850 and you can have GTX480/HD5870 performance. Currently the 5850 is the best all round card you can buy IMO.

If your an Nvidia man looking for 5850 performance then I think you need to be looking at a GTX470 instead TBH.

Exactly the reason why i havent bought the 460 yet! :) times have changed a lot since my 9700 Pro! - *mumbes piece of pap*

but depending on wether AA is on or off impacts the result of whats the better card.

GTX460.

Just to annoy everyone who says 5850.

Don't be a sheep! Go Green!

Stick it to the man. :D

Get that gtx 460 you chose, you said it yourself you prefer nvidia, I see way too many people today who are no happy with the change from sides as they got used to green/red.

and as always, both cards are fantastic, pretty much similar so your won't make a mistake if you let your "fanboy" side out and let it decide :P

Edit: For that price asus reference is a win, got mine at 1000/1300 xD
