So, having searched for a while, it seems Temporary Insurance is madly expensive !

Just bought a car, to replace one of ours - yet to sell the 'old' one, and my current insurers (Hastings) will not keep the old car on the policy for a week or so whilst I sell it.

I need to change the insurance over to the new car, which means I have to seek some temporary cover for the old one......quotes seem to be about £130-150 for 14 days !!! That is more or less 4 months of premium, on the current annual rate :(

So, anyone got any advice on a suitable, reasonably priced route ?

TIA

They are all rubbish now, I used to pay 10 quid a day with dayinsure for the first 2 days then 5 quid. Got a 3 fly quote last week - 79 quid now!! For 3 days! I only pay a bit more for 3 months on my car!

Interesting that this should come up now...

Yesterday i rang my new insurer (swinton) with regards to adding a work colleague onto my insurance policy for 14 days as i am going away and she was going to use my car for that period.

The nice lady told me that it would cost £186.00 to add her to the policy for 14 days, alternatively she could be added to the policy for 10 months for £166!

I also tried ecover who quoted about £170!

I distinctly remember getting 1 months cover on my brothers Impreza and it cost about £100.

Its madness, no wonder some people dont/cant get insured.

Take out a new policy and cancel within 14 days, it's a bit of effort but so is day cover and it doesn't cost anything in the end.

Looking around, seems like it will be circa. £25 admin fee if cancelling in 14-day cooling off period......up to about £50~odd if thereafter, but that also means pro-rata refund.
So, conceivably, this will cost me £25 for up to 14 days cover, and around £50+ 1 monthly installment if I need up to a month - either way less than temporary quotes for 14 days !

I guess the annoyance is that, when I worked in Insurance about 10yrs back, companies would generally keep the 'old' car on teh policy for up to 2 weeks or so for a nominal fee......how times have changed :(
