Good one mate, boys are short staffed working there behinds off and your just pretty much slacking off. NO wonder your going no where, sorry but get down and give them a hand at any opportunity.

Sorry just the way I perceive it.

Now do we need to guess what say a polish worker would have said in this case? And you're probably the group who scream 'they took our jerbs' afterwards.

He probably would have said, 'yes, boss' and 'I also have a few cousins that can give us a hand with the lifting - for free too'. Who will the manager hire in the next recruitment drive?

I love the utter bunch of corporate do gooders. "i would do it" " you should do it" "be thankful you have a job do it"

Your all push overs. He asked him to go unload a lorry. Hes not a warehouse worker he should say no. He did job done. Some of you need a spine. And some of the responses in here are outright shocking calling him a muppet is not on. The abuse is not required.

i dont know about anyone else but in my work contract "failure to carry out a reasonable request counts as gross misconduct"

Now stop being precious and do your ****ing job.
I think you've missed the point of the thread... it's not his job?

My contract has a clause saying basically they can ask me to do some work not related to my job title for a 'reasonable amount of time'. If I was in your position the answer would be based on
a) if they have a similar clause in my contract
b) how much I liked the person asking
c) how busy I was
d) how long I see myself staying in the job

I can't believe that you said no to this.

Last summer, the school I work at had a huge delivery of hundreds of boxes filled with the new uniforms. I work in IT, but there wasn't much to do so when asked by our site manager if I'd haul some of the stuff in, I did it. Why? Because we're all part of the team and it's good to do favours for people, because you never know when you might need one yourself. As well as that, sometimes it's good to have a change. I don't want to do computer-related stuff all the time, so even something as simple as mindlessly hauling boxes from a delivery truck to a store cupboard is welcome.

You have little to do, so instead of going and doing something that would keep you occupied, you're going to sit around with nothing to do? Please, grow up and get on with it. It's a simple favour and it won't harm you to do it. ;)

To me it just sounds like you're avoiding exercise at all costs. I think he's trying to be nice to you by getting you off the computer chair, and now you've just thrown that opportunity in his face. How could you? :(

What asking him to do a job?

He would be sacked at my place too if he refused to do something, what makes you so special OP?

Asking him to do something completely unrelated to his day to day role, something which he may or may not have the necessary training for.

Oh come on, if he was being asked to come in on a day off, or to do it unpaid then yeah I would see your point. But he's sitting doing nothing and getting paid for it and he's been asked to help out whilst (presumably) getting paid more than the guys that do it fulltime.

By saying no, all he has done has earned himself a reputation as being workshy and not a team player. Given that the job he's doing doesn't seem to be worth the employment of a someone he could really find himself out of a job.

To all the people crying "we're all part of one team..." and "just do the job"... what would you do if the task was to clean the toilets? About as related to IT as emptying a van. Would you be so willing to 'take one for the team'?

Lol I have actually cleaned the toilets without being asked too! the shift I'm in charge of are a team and we all muck in and help each other out

we all muck in and help each other out

taken out of context that could be quite disturbing

OP's decision was based on his feelings towards work. He clearly doesnt like his job, yet hasnt got the cahunas to leave and go somewhere else.

Being miserable and not helping out will only give them further justification to let you go as soon as they're short on funds to pay him.

Do you not get it? He isn't going to get anywhere within the company by not helping his Boss. You need to do favours for the Boss's to work your way up the corporate ladder. The worse thing you can have is a reputation of only looking out for your self and not being a team player as soon as you say no to helping somebody else steps in and gets those brownie points.

Pros of not doing it :

Less work for the day
A feeling of sticking it to the man and not being a lapdog.

Cons :

Boss is less inclined to help you out? Want to go home early? day off ? pay rise etc.

Somebody will help him and as he has already been rejected by you the next person looks even better.

The guy which takes the opportunity will now be the go to guy. He wil get more experience and more time with the boss. And when the promotions come up who do you think is going to get it. The guy that said no or the guy that helped him.
