Hi Folks,

Me and the Mrs have flights to Amsterdam for a long weekend on the 3rd to 6th September. Looking for advice on nice hotels to stay in the centre of the city.

Also what sights are worth checking out while we are there, never been before so looking for all the best places to check and things to do.

Whats the deal with the red light district, mates tell me to stay away from the place anytime after 7pm.

Cheers :)

Red light district is not where I'd take my Missus but if you are heading down there then stop in the Argentinian steak house as that's where you'll get the best food whilst your over there.

You can pick up some "Milka Choco Swing" bars from Schipol airport on the way back. Seriously nice chocolate.

The worst thing is having to use the door handle to open the door and leave. You just can't avoid doing that. Either that or the fact you're having to look at the other dudes also staring at the 'performance'.

Good times had in Amsterdam, but also pretty damn gross now that I look back at it!

Re hotels

Krasnaplosky if you want ot be central

NH Amsterdam Centre if you want Leidseplein area

Sofitel Grand if you want s****y

Krasnapolsky is where Liverpool Staff used to stay when we played in the Amsterdam tournaments over there. Great hotel with decent location but a little bit in the thick of it for my tastes.

Having lived there, I always recommend people to stay away from Dam area and head out to the Spui. It's a lot quieter there and less touristy. My mates used to stay in the NH City Centre on Spuistraat and said it was great. I only saw the lobby, which was very nice :P There are loads of Brown Cafes (not Coffeeshops!!!) in Spui which serve amazing ranges of beers and are great to sit and pass an hour people watching.

For a first visit I would say good things to see are

Van Gough/ Rijksmuseum
Anne Frankhuis then a beer or ten to cure the depression
Heineken Brewery
Red Light District- Don't worry about here, just act sensibly and you will be fine. Ignore the drug pushers and keep your valuables hidden and safe. Do NOT try and take photos there though, it's frowned upon.
Canal Cruise

For food, any street of the leidseplein will have a number of reasonable restaurants in it with touts trying to drag you in. They are mostly average restaurants but you wont have too bad a meal in there.

Oh and beware of the price of beer in tourist areas. I hear its up to 7 Euros a pint in places now!!!

Amsterdam was great with the guys.. not so sure as couple though!

The red light is open all day, just stay away from the blue...

I imagine he means 'Gauchos'. It is really good. There are a few of them throughout the city. Not cheap (but food isn't in Amsterdam, little is), but good.
Red Light District is fine all day and night as long as you're not an idiot. Just keep your wits about you, ignore the drug dealers and don't take pictures. Don't be shocked if some of the women grab at you when walking down some of the narrower alleyways. Just carry on, and make sure you're valuables aren't on show or easily grabable.

The Flower markets are great, either go to the Worlds biggest outside the city or the numerous ones around the city. There's a big floating one which is a good sight.

Good advice. One drug dealer started following me and my mate round at one point. We just ignored him and eventually he went.

Can save a nice chunk of money by doing 'secret hotels' on lastminute.com - for a wide range of cheap or 4/5* hotels.

It is easy enough to find out which hotel it is (usually) by googling the blurb they give you (usually matches the one on the hotels website).
