Nice.

I think if you can't spend much more and get an i7 then I would probably get the AMD option although the i5 would out-perform the AMD for gaming I think.

Only things I would change are:

Swap the 5770 crossfire for http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-002-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502

and buy another one in the future if you need to. The 5770 xfire would be awesome but a 5870 rips thru any game anyway and xfire 5870 will just be silly.

I would also change the HDD for a Samsung F3 either 500GB or 1TB depending on budget.

I would if u have the budget buy an SSD as I have one also and it's the best upgrade you can ever make imo.

to answer ur question RE: 5870

If you are asking 5870 Vs 5770 in Xfire.

There is a slight improvement in gaming FPS with the 5870 over 2 5770s or sometime they are bang on even. The point is, that you would get the same performance with 1 card for 2 of the 5770s. Then, in a couple of years or whenever u like, you will be able to buy another 5870 for less than it costs now and ur performance will impeccable.

Other benefit of just getting 1 card are power consumption, heat, space in ur system. I have read on here many times, and I agree - that it is always best to get the best SINGLE card you can, and buy another in the future as and when games require it. Which with a 5870 will a fair while away I should think.

You could get 2 Samsung F3s and put them in raid - depends on budget. I wudnt bother. Just get one of those for now, one 5870 and in the future buy another 5870 and a nice SSD and ur system will fly like new!

I have a 4890 which I believe is better than a single 5830 and noticeably better than a (single) 5770. I have not bought another 4890 yet but I will when my fps drops to 30 in new games with high res etc...

Enjoy ur new system.

yeah totally agree, a single card would be better.
Crossfire/SLI is good for when you need extra power than what u have, and can just add another card instead of spending a lot more on a better replacement card, or if you want top of the range, so you get 2 of the best cards you can get.

buying 2 average cards for crossfire/SLI is kinda pointless really.

if you already had a 5770 and wanted to upgrade, then it would be a good idea, but not when u are buying them both together

OK, Here is my latest AMD Rig (Phase 2)

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5870 PCS+ "CODMW2 Edition" 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £281.99

AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1055T 2.80GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £157.44

Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AMD 890GX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £119.99

LG BH10LS30 10x BluRay-RW / 16 x DVD±RW Drive - Black (Retail) £114.99

Intel X25-V Value 40GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (SSDSA2MP040G2R5) £86.94

Patriot Viper 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-10666 1333MHz Dual Channel £70.49

Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler £62.99

OCZ StealthXStream 2 600W Power Supply £60.99

Xigmatek Asgard Midi Tower Case - Black £26.99

Sub Total : £836.43
Shipping : £12.50
VAT : £148.56
Total : £997.49

Or as above except Intel - Phase 2

Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £158.61
Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £112.99

Sub Total : £831.47
Shipping : £12.50
VAT : £147.69
Total : £991.66

Difference being -2 cores and £6 Cheaper

I have compared the two cpu's and the i5 comes up better for gaming so I will either go with the i5 or the phenom 2 x4. not the x6

EDIT: Right then. The i5 750 beats both in tests overall so I am pretty much swayed to the i5 now. :D but I will most likely get the 760 which is a little faster aswell.

so you save £20 if you go with the Phenom 2 965Be how much more is it for the intel system? (inc motherboard and ram)

Right I think I have now created a decent spec gaming rig that I like.

I have gone with the Intel I5 because in performance tests it pretty much came out top against AMD Phenom II's. I have gone with the single 5870 but dropped to the HIS model, I have also dropped down to a OCZ SSD and changed the psu to the one on offer. I have done this so I can build the system for less than £1000 and have a decent case.

So as follows the latest and nearly final until Saturday.

Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £152.74

Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £112.99

OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 (1333MHz) Low-Voltage Dual Channel £74.99

HIS ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £274.99

OCZ Onyx 32GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (OCZSSD2-1ONX32G) £64.99

Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler (Socket LGA775/1156/1366/AM2/AM3) £62.99

OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply £58.74

LG BH10LS30 10x BluRay-RW / 16 x DVD±RW Drive - Black (Retail) £114.99

Coolermaster CM-690 II Lite Dominator Case - Black £62.99

Total : £993.62

Opinions On this hopefully final build if all is in stock, and getting finance.

do you really need the blu-ray writer or the H50?
reason i mention is i'd trade them in for the better SSD such as the vertex 2e 40gb with its 200MB/sec write and read speeds plus trim support for windows 7

Thermolab Baram perhaps? although i noticed that the LGA1156 heatsinks are few and far between, is the LGA1366 using the same fitting or ?
