Critique a car someone wants me to look at (3 series Beemer init)

So basically your parents are fronting the cash?

I get the diesel 3 series suits your needs but...you didn't pick it - they did?

Thread makes no sense :(

No, they're not at all. It's money I've got of my own back, nothing to do with them.

They've just made a suggestion which I wasn't that keen on but have decided to go and view it anyway. Like my Step dad said, if I only look at Alfas then I'll only buy an Alfa. I was just asked for some advise on the car they had suggested, that's all.

And actually, as I've said, the more I look at them the more I like them.

After lots of looking at these on various websites I'm actually really keen on the idea of a 3 series but in petrol guise rather than diesel. And also a sport model as opposed to an SE.

Looking at the figures and what I've read, the 330i is the pick of the bunch and the figures speak for themselves really. The 320 seems particularly pointless withe the 325 being less so.

Looking at the amount of cash I have to spend too (c. £7k), It's going to be very dificult to get a get a really nice facelift 330ci sport and so I'm going to have to make a compromise really I guess, either get the saloon, an SE or a 325 (or a combination of two of the three).

Also, all the decent ones seems to be miles away and autos? What are the auto boxes like on these?

Anyway, I'm glad I've decided to take a look at them and I may end up with after all.

You'll get a 330i Sport Saloon for that money quite easily. The thing with the saloon (and touring) is that the facelift came two years earlier, so naturally they are available far cheaper.

No point in lumbering yourself with an SE though.

Yeah, I must admit, an SE over a sport is perhaps a compromise I'm not willing to make. I quite like the saloon actually and I know the 325 is down on power but I think I'd go with a better condition 325 for the right price over a less so 330i.

Coming from my 205, even a 325 will be a heft increase in power.

Sanchez - What else have you actually looked at/test drove?

I've been to look at a number of Alfa GT and 147s. Some Honda S2000s, Audi A3 and a Mazda RX8s. A couple of Mondeos (in ST form) and a few 3 series BMWs.

Of those I've driven the A3 and the Alfa GT. I'm off to test drive a 320d SE and 325i Sport tomorrow.
