One last time before I press the buy button, GTX 470 vs the 5870

Buying that video card was like buying a ps3!

Would you say the 5870 is more power than a ps3? I know they use two different types f graphics, but in relative terms?

Combine the 5870 with an oced 4ghz i7 920 or better is like racing a F1 car vs a pushbike.:D

I have a dvi monitor however, I dont think that card has any dvi connector on it?

Yo dood

It uses Mini display port connectors. However, it also comes supplied with 1 x Mini DP to HDMI Cable, 2 x Mini DP to Single Link DVI Cable, and 2 x Mini DP to DP Cable.

Hope that helps dewd

I did! But couldnt find much info :(

Anyway, thanks for putting my mind at ease!

Soooo, how many times are you going to ask the same question?

And how many times do you need it answering?

Ok, dude.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

I think I made the right choice of cards... was gona go for the cheapo HIS, which comapred to what I got for £25 more is far better!

£299 is still very expensive, but oh well, I paid £215 in April 2008 for my 3870x2 (the alternative was a 9800GX2 for £400), so thats how much things things cost I suppose.

You guys would be proud!

Iv managed to overclock my qx9650 for the first time in two and a half years to 3.6, and im going to try to get it to go 3.8 on stock volts.

Suposedly its doable, and I think if I manage 3.8 il stop there as 3.8-4ghz is minimal, and 4ghz will need a hefty volt increase, unless some one could enlighten me?

Anyway had a little gaming session at 3.6 yesterday still with my trusty 3870x2 and gaming was defo more smooth and windows was really snappy!

Should recieve my new 5870 today!

Hmmm...

Am I mad?

Although my new 5870 2gb is nice it runs cool, its quiet and it runs pretty well, Im thinking I should have gone for the gtx 470 after all....

Better for DX11 games, better drivers and physx, which I wouldnt have minded trying this time around.

Might send it back!

Also was playing warhead yesterday, and I was noticing graphics issues, like white speckled dots in the trees etc....

Also feel a bit silly for splashing out £300...

Iv asked this before and will ask it again just to confirm, can you play warhead 1920x1200 enthusiast settings with 2xaa on a gtx470? (obviously it may have the occasional dip in fps, as did my 5870)

WoW he's still debating what card to get...

Ok let's sum the pros and cons of both cards up.

5870
Faster than the 470
Runs Cooler than the 470
Uses a lot less power than the 470 in idle and under load
Quieter than a 470
Is £45 more expensive than the 470

470
Slower than 5870
Uses more power than the 5870 in idle and under load
Runs hotter than the 5870
Is £45 cheaper than a 5870
Noisier than 5870

Now weigh things up, are the pros and cons above worth the extra £45 for the 5870.....hell yeah.

That correct cos when I was using ASUS GF GTX470 and then open heavy gaming that was much hotter as temp climbed higher at 98oC so already sold as I bought ASUS Crosshair IV with ASUS ATI HD5870 V2 (gone back to AMD from Nvidia) and this card has good big fan than 470 which is smaller fan - heavy gaming on 5870 was 57oC that excellent also very quieter so go for 5870 but that for you to decide which one you press the button..

Sorry you feel like that :( i'm totaly in love with mine i think its an amazeing card havent had any driver problems yet and it totaly kicks ass in Crysis :P

It just seems from this review http://techreport.com/articles.x/19342/2 that the gtx 470 more or less matches the 5870 in the games where the 5870 has slightly more fps, or when it comes to more modern games such as dx11 titles, the gtx 470 is actually better than the 5870...

I think this means that looking forward, the gtx 470 is gona have more mileage in it than the 5870. Additionally the 5870 I bought cost me £300 when the GTX 470 is around 240-250 for near identical if not better performance.

The only down side to the GTX 470 is probably going to be noise and heat. The 5870 I have is quiet and very cool, and very powerfull.

But, ATI drivers are not great. I personally have had issues, I noticed as I mentioned above graphics corruption whilst playing Warhead, and I like how Nvidia with most driver updates increase performance. Something ATI dont do enough off.

For instance compare the release notes for the 10.7 Ati and the Nvidia Foreware
258.96 drivers.

Ati, advertise that Borderlands has have a performance increase of around 5% accross the 3000, 4000 and 5000 gpus.

While Nvidia's drivers say:

This may be marketing on behalf of Nvidia, a clever ploy to make it LOOK like they have more development going in to the drivers... but with all the games going the way of TWIMTBP, why should I suffer from brand loyalty and stick with ATI?

Im not having a bump at ATI, I just feel, I want to try Nvidia again, aditionally the GTX is 50-60 cheaper, and looks like it has better DX11 performance, tesselation and in some instances higher minimums.

Only question I have (not that I care for warhead or crysis, but as a benchmark)

Can the GTX 470 do Warhead enthusiats settings 2xaa at 1920x1200?

Also the GTX 470 is a 2010 product and the 5870 is from 2009... not a big deal, but Im sure that will have a say come a time in the future.

Well I'm going to get 2 gtx 470's soon, so I'll let you know how I get on. :p

But all jokes aside, that 5870 is a great card. but of course you have to be happy with your choice at the end of the day.
