Hey bought Roccat Kave 5.1s after all the awesome reviews they had, was really looking forward to these supposedly great headphones.

I connected them to the on-board sound of the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 mobo, played COD MW2, beats like prodigy, faithless, couple of 2010 movies . . . WTF.

The quality isn't amazing at all, it was ok but they didn't come close to my basic Sennheiser CX 350 Street II that I've been using. The surround sound on them wasn't as good as its hyped up to be, anyone else think this ?

Anyone recommend any decent ones for overall sound quality and isolation (as the kaves were loud as **** outside the headset :/) I want a decent surround sound headset that is great for gaming, movies and music in which you can really hear the quality like the Sennheiser brand.

What's that? Surround headphones suck?

I've been saying it for years, people never listen. Go and buy some proper headphones like the DT880 Pro (good isolation), Sennheiser HD555/595/650 etc.

Edit: The SEnnheisers will leak sound, but I've not found mine to be overly loud.

NS1000 have an annoying background hiss with the noise cancelling on and sound naff with it off. DR150 are good but open, so leak sound.

Yup, found out the same last year. Was interested in a surround headset, read up here and a few other places, found out they sucked and bought a set of 595s which are absolutely fantastic.

Music I cant imagine having surround headphones makes any significant difference over a good set on standard headphones.

Films, cant really comment on as unless I'm casually watching something while working (and wouldnt care or notice the sound that much), itll be on speakers and not headphones.

Games are the only real place it makes a slight difference but the sound immersion and location you get with good stereo headphones + a good soundcard is more than enough for me. Messed about with settings between my 595s and a set of 5.1 speakers and there was little difference in both 'quiet, there's a guy behind me' and 'OMG explosions and bullets are all around me' situations and I can all but imagine theres even less of a difference between surround and stereo headphones.

Im glad its not just me, any idea how I'm going to send them back to zon after I've opened them?? Really can't afford to lose that money on them since I have no income atm :/ Very tempted about the Sennheiser HD 555s

And yet you mention grado, the leakiest phones of all, you fail at the internetz. :p

That's some nice self ownage there, I said he should get DT880 Pros.

Darth beyers? fine if he likes a whole lotta bass, goldrings are still best for vfm, yes they creak and yes they're a bit still but for price nothing touches em ;)

High quality stereo headphones > Surround sound bull.

I get better spatial awareness via sound with my HD650s then I ever did with the one and only pair of 5.1 headsets I owned.

My DTS/Dolby amp will handle some "pseudo-surround" if I fancy it and does a much better job then a mish-mash of speakers in a headset.

If they weren't so hilariously overpriced in the UK I'd reccomend Audio Technica A900s. Lovely cans. RRP £279! I paid £110!

They cost more in pounds than they do in dollars, as in £279 vs $229. What the heck?

I never said differently, but the NS1000 do have an annoying hiss, the DR150 will leak sound and I didn't mention Grados...

I don't see what you're getting at exactly?

He wants good, closed back headphones, Beyer Dynamic are generally the way to go.

Haha now i did some self ownage, i was looking at the reply under your first hah.

See even i don't know what im on about!!! ;)

For gaming hmm plenty of good opinions for ultrasone hifi 780 if you can stretch to them.

I did not see the bit requiring them to be closed. What was the reason?

HD650s do not leak sound THAT much, they are open of course, and it will be audible if you have it very loud or someone makes a point of sitting ontop of you.

Thanks for the great feed back guys, gunna save up for some new headphones in the future, stuck with these roccats now though due to amazons stupid return policy.

Roccat Kave 5.1 = Build quality and Extras > Sound Quality.

I have found one fix that really improves the quality of them when it comes to Music, SRS HD Audio Lab with VLC Player, much improved quality but they are a louder outside the headset.

I'm going to save up for a decent sound card and headphones when I start getting clients in. Hands down, what do you think will be the best quality sound card and headset for around £150-£200 for both playing multimedia music and moveis ?
