New build for friend

Here's my final build (I hope!) with the PSU & HD people recommended.

Personally I'd still go with the AM2+/AM3 option for a budget build:

Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel (KHX8500D2K2/4G) £70.49
(£59.99) £70.49
(£59.99)
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £46.99
(£39.99) £46.99
(£39.99)
Gigabyte GA-M68M-S2P GeForce 7025 (Socket AM3/AM2+) DDR2 microATX Motherboard £38.99
(£33.18) £38.99
(£33.18)

Think the extra £35 is worth it for the extra 2GB RAM (it's also nicer RAM :p)

I agree but the system I'm building is going to be running XP so 4GB would be a bit pointless.

All seemed to fire up okay. Not hooked it up to a monitor yet. I'm still waiting for the OS disc so not much else I can do at the moment. Oh the optical drive OcUK sent me is knackered - makes a weird noise when you close the tray ...... then it just pops right back out again. I can't get it to stay in. Will RMA in the morning ;)

Well I fixed the DVD drive - The front bezel was not on properly & the drive tray wasn't able to insert fully as a result. Sorted ;)

Unfortuantely though nothing else seems to be working. I don't get a post bleep when firing it up, there is no signal from the VGA port to the monitor & the keyboard LED's don't light when powering up. Erm. Not a good start :(

Everything sorted now. Just wanted to post on here & say thanks again for the advice. The XP boot up time seems very fast. Certainly faster with than my PC. Programs boot up very, very quickly as well. Shuts down quick as well. Well pleased ;)

Glad you're happy and hope your friend likes it, the Samsung F3 drives are nice and quick and great value for money these days.

Then disaster!! - got a call from my mate this afternoon saying the PC wouldn't boot up. It now comes up with the 'start Windows normally' option but fails to boot & just keeps looping round. Apparently it also does the same if you select one of the safe boot options. Doesn't sound good :(
