Im currently running sli gtx 275's at stock (2x 640mhz core clocked xfx cards), system is an i7 920 at 4ghz, theyre pretty nice cards, but a bit power hungry, and run a bit warm. What would be the best single card option at the minute, resolution i play at is 1920x1200.

5870 or 480, I would recommend the 5870, cracking card, low power usage and runs cool, 480 is a wee bit faster but all so runs hotter and consumes considerably more power.

Wouldn't the 5870 be a bit of downgrade, consider GTX275 SLI is as fast, if not faster than 4890 Crossfire? I guess it does have a benefit of being just one card and lower power consumption, but from performance's stand point, it doesn't seem like an "upgrade" that's worth it.

Are the 5870's power hungry?, Tbh ive never used an ati card before, i know from various friends who game that the 5870 is a very potent card, and theyll be coming down in price eventually due to new ati cards, this would leave me with the option of adding a second, (mobo is sli/crossfire capable). Current psu is a corsair hx 850w.

Are you wanting to stay with nvidia?

Nice pooches btw, haven't seen one of those for a long time.
Yep, the irish setters are nice dogs arc@css, though those arent mine. My last setter i had was quite a few years ago, only had german pointers since mate.

PSU should do just fine, just incase what have you got in your case?

CF 5870s use less power than SLI GTX275s so you should be fine.

You could get one of them for now and add a 2nd later on.

I would wait for the 6 series myself as your setup is still very good.

By end of year if we lucky otherwise Jan/Feb.

If you want quietness and good cooling then a Vapor-X 5870 might be ideal.(i like mine but you would need two if you want an upgrade over current setup as one is about same performance.)

Quiteness would be good as well, when gaming i run my 275's at 75% fan speed, normally use headphones when gaming, the cards hit 70-76c. But the noise can be a bit distracting if im not using headphones, also theyve added an additional 5c to my overall system temp.

I'd wait also, as 2 gtx 275's at the resolution you play at are still more than enough for todays games.

I think if they miss early December they will release them/it in march so they can stack up the amount and have less stock issues

i was actually considering getting another 275 to sli but then decided i'd rather get a 480 instead.

This thread is making me think otherwise as if I was in your shoes I highly doubt I'd be tempted with the gtx480 or 5870- I'd wait till nvidia launches a dual gpu card before I made the jump to make it worthwhile. You could always buy 1 now then sli/xfire in the future for even more power but till you do that it would be more of a sidegrade. :)

How's about the 5970? Its dual gpu, so it'll be faster than the 275s by a large margin, and their prices have come down by a large degree recently due to competition
