Hey up all.

Right my bro is back from the army in 3 weeks time and seeing as though I totaled his pc whilst he was away i need to get him a rig ready for his return to civvy street. I have all the parts pretty much apart from one that is coming from the good old MM.

Anyways when he went away he had 8800gtx in sli on a q6600. Now when he comes back im giving him my q9650 and sli gtx 280's. But cos im me and cant resist playing ive just bought a 8800gtx to throw in the system as well.

So the question is will a 1000w psu be enough for 2 gtx 280's and a 8800gtx? The psu is a branded Hi-Power.

He will be using this on his huge tv in his front room I think its a 50 incher so I was just wanting to make sure his system is capable of powering the tv.

never heard of that brand, so sounds like another rubbish make, where it only puts out 300w real power despite having a 1000w label on it.

buy something decent.

You can get it from e-tailers. I already have it like. Been nearly 2 years now and its done fine with 2 gtx 275's in sli. I was just concerned if it would handle another card. Been looking around just now and looks like im gonna go for a corsair one i think though just to be on the safe side.

Says it has 4 12v rails of 20Amps each, whether it can output 960W of 12v goodness though is another thing. Retail price of about £70.

If it can truly put out that kind of wattage then it would be fine. This PSU is at the value end of 1000Watt supplies.

Explain all the working out mate im lost!

I would put money on it that your PSU will not generate anything close to 1000w mate. It may be rated to do it but there's no chance it will with a name like 'Hi-Power'. Sorry if I sound cheeky but you can't afford to use a Mickey mouse PSU with them Graphics cards.

No worries matey im glad to be finding out now!! Like I said in an earlier post it powered my 275's in sli ok. But I guess the 280's must draw more juice!

Watts = Volts x Amps

12 Watts = 12 Volts x 1 Amp

The PSU has 20 Amps per rail.
Rail Watts = 12 Volts x 20 Amps.
12 x 20 = 240

It has 4 rails.

240 Watts x 4 = 960 Watts total theoretical output.

However I doubt if it really can power that much at that price.

Cheers mate for that. Really handy piece of info. Never actually new how it all worked out so thanks very much. You learn something new everyday. Thanks
