Cancelling Virgin Media

Hi,

As a student household we got virgin media september 2009, as we are all moving out in the next 3weeks (well I am the last person left to move out) should I ring them up soon to ask if we can cut ourselves off 15th August, or will we have to pay a full august and september?

Could I be cheeky and cancel the direct debit as it comes from my bank account.

i am a student, my contract start was 1st sept 2009.

i phoned up yesterday, cancelled it. (they were supposed to pickup the stuff today but didn't, their loss.)

youll have to pay aug/sept i believe. We had some 3.30 added on for some reason.

Note, it'll take 30days to "process" the cancel, so best to phone up now so it stops in sept (end of your contract) so you dont pay another month ontop.

Standard practice is usually a 30 day notice/cancellation, the services would cease at that point, if there were any months unpaid remaining that would be likely be added as a cancellation fee, as you would still need to fulfill the original 12 month contract.

You could, but whoever is the account holder would be chased by virgin, if you've moved out before they start pursuing the account holder for the outstanding amount it may be hard for them to get ahold of him/her, thus resulting perhaps in a default and black marks on his/her credit file/

might be, best is to just ask virgin everything you can think of (the girl on the phone was stupidly friendly and helpfull to me)

as mentioned, my contract doesnt end untill sept, but we arranged to pick up the stuff today due to me moving out. They will do it when you request for,so anytime which is good for you (if they turn up...)

Additionally in future be careful when signing contracts, I thought virgin did 9 month student contracts.
You m8s have had you on this one, having your name against a 12 months contract when you won't be there for the duration. in future get someone else to sign, or take monthlys with a view to paying 12 instead of 9 or 10.
 
Ok cheers, hope they can get the stuff in the next 2 weeks then, otherwise they won't be getting it back.

However when we moved into this house there was all the virgin media stuff left, so we have 2 sets of it... obviously we aren't dealing with the previous set, but they are more than welcome to it if they pick it up :)

tbh he has been there for nearly 12 months :P

on mine (50meg bundle) they wouldnt budge from a 12 monther. Luckily a month isnt that much so heyho!

Tbh, I am not sure what our contract length is. It was all done very quickly and I kind of regret getting it in my name, but everyone who I lived with were being pathetic.

But the payments haven't been an issue, although VM have increased it twice without letting me know.. but I let it slip for a couple of quid a month.

It better be a 12month contract because I'll be fuming if I'm left paying for it September +

If it's any longer seek legal advice.

Due to telecommuncations act (1997 Not sure of the year though!)m you can't be charged a cancellation fee for any contract over 12 months in length greater than the initial 12 months of the contract.

I'm not sure how this plays out with other services as the only experience i have with the contract side of said legislation is mobile phone contract, although i believe it holds true for other services such as broadband and phone.
