The ContiSport Contact3 thread

Spotted an Audi parked next to me today with what I think are these CS3 wheels - so I snapped a pic for you guys. ;)

Though got Pirelli's myself. ;)

Sorry to bump, but anyone noticed these are quite poor in the wet? I've just aquaplaned:eek: was going a steady 40 in an NSL (really heavy rain), hit a bit of standing water and it just went straight, I basically accepted I was going to crash then it just gripped at the last second!

It's not just heavy rain either, they have poor grip when the road is anything but bone dry.

I wonder how hard it was raining? Just because you've got 'leet pro tyrezz' doesn't mean you can go tanking into a foot of standing water at 40mph and not crash.

I'm sure CS3 aren't the only tyres to suffer from aquaplaning when hitting standing water at 40, but they seem to be less grippy than my KU31 were, even in damp/greasy conditions.

I tried to put my GS3D's into situations where it would aquaplane, never :(

Hi there

With winter looming I might be looking for a set of tyres for the EVO when temps drop and things get very wet.

So how do you guys find these in the wet?

Most important factor for me is feedback through the wheel, had Vredsteins on the EVO previously as found in the wet on the EVO they just gave little feedback, lots of grip but no enough feedback.

So how do you find the CS3 in the wet?

if the temps are dropping I'd get winter tyres, performance car drivers on Pistonheads say they are night and day better in cold wet weather over regular summer tyres and when the snow hit they weren't as badly effected. Of course they're not ice tyres so some care has to be taken. Food for thought?

Many claims are made about how your choice of tyre can affect fuel consumption. The Conti's are supposed to be pretty good with regards to fuel consumption. But is this true?

NEVER FEAR OCUK, FOR I SET OUT TO FIND OUT.

I decided to TEST the fuel economy provided by these tyres with an economy run. The rules were simple - brim the tank, drive, brim the tank again, calculate economy the old fashioned way. I would need to drive at the speed limit at all times - but not above. So no crawling along at 55mph - it was speed limit all the way. I also couldnt be bothered with other stuff so the AC stayed on.

I began by pulling up Sainsburys in Plymouth, behind this really nice E39 M5. I've taken a photo to show you guys. As the guy came back I called out 'Nice M5 mate' but he didnt seem very happy, slammed his door and drove off faster than I would advise for leaving a petrol pump. Shame.

Anyway, I filled up to the brim and obtained a receipt as PROOF!

And then I drove all the way up the A38 (Which is 40 miles of hilly dual carriageway) to the M5, and then up the M5 before pulling off at Cribbs Causeway and once again filling up, to the brim, at the Shell garage opposite Dick Lovett BMW.

Anyway, as you can see, my trip used 13.72 litres of fuel to cover a distance of 118 miles. This is 3.022 gallons, which means I acheived...

39.04 miles per gallon.

I dont know about you, but I think 39.04 confirmed, verified and 100% accurate MPG fill-up to fill-up out of an 8 year old 3 litre 5 Series at Motorway speeds the whole way (Plus a hilly dual carriageway) is nothing short of amazing.

Oh, and the answer to the original question? I used to get about 36-37ish out of the F1's.

You might be interested to know what I got on the way back (Topped up at the same Shell on the way down from Worcester today).... 33mpg :( The economy thing got a bit boring. Loads less frustrating though as you dont get tards pulling out into the outside lane etc at 70..

It's not really that accurate though is it, how do you know the fuel level was the same both times? ;)
Unless the fuel was resting on the filler, or on your shoes.

It's as good as you are going to get, even the minute variation as to how much it lets in before clicking off wouldnt drop it down to say 35mpg :p

I expect you to beat it in the Volvo as its lighter ;)

Haha, your engine is slightly more sophisticated and your 5 doesn't have the aerodynamic properties of a brick ;)
Just brimmed the tank after 450 miles: 26 MPG average, including a 250 (nearly) speed limit-abiding motorway run.

Not that bad if I'm honest, considering I had the aircon on too.
The new P7 Cinturatos are supposed to be more economical than your CS3s, so perhaps that helped nudge it over 25..
