What gaming resolutions can I expect from HDTV?

I know how silly this sounds, but please humour me!

My HTPC bits are arriving soon, and at some point I will transfer my HD4870 over too and connect to Sony HDTV via HDMI for gaming purposes.

Now my 1080p Samsung monitor obviously lets me play various resolutions upto 1920x1080, as well as lower ones if I choose.

Will my HDTV allow lower gaming resolutions other than 1920x1080 via HDMI? Or will it not have as many supported resolutions as a dedicated PC monitor?

Thanks :D

You should be able to lower the res if needed, I sometimes run my tv @ 720p rather than 1080p.

When using a monitor, the available resolutions tend to be displayed. Does this mean that video games should also only give the option of 1080p and 720p when hooked up to the TV?

All good. Just hoofed my Silverstone RV02 downstairs to try it!

All resolutions available, just that only 1920x1080 and 1280x720 fill the screen exactly. All good :p
