I've seen an evo VI for sale for £3k

spec as follows

no mileage listed and it's 40 miles away. anyone think it's worth going to look at or is it likely to be a shed?

Dealer with no forecourt and lots of ropey cars that "just need TLC", looks like a major garage employee knocking out out PX's they can't move on or reposessions

Might be worth a punt - I'm sure you could recoup a fair bit of the purchase cost by breaking it for parts if it was a complete nail.

Cars like these are always a gamble.

Cars like these have always "just had a rebuild" or "thousands spent in last month" or "just need a bit of TLC", they are money pits,

You needed a lot of money to keep them tip top when they were new and you need even more when they are old

Seems suspiciously cheap to me?

Isn't the IV also the version that suffers from 'crank walk' which can kill the engine?

An Evo is the car you need to really take care when buying, as buying a crap one would bring news meaning to the phrase word money pit. That you talk about this as an Evo VI when the advert shows a IV suggests you might want to read up a little more...the MLR forums would be a good place to start.

I'm looking at all sorts at the minute in the 3-5k bracket ranging from fiat coupes to mondeo st220's via Clio 182's

I'll be doing plenty of research before I let the focus go as it's very low milage and as yet 100% reliable in the past 6 years

What do you want apart from something quick? What sort of driving do you do? Need much by way of practicality?

Some very different cars there...

Evo and Fiat Coupe, both old, potentially expensive if things go wrong, I imagine at the sort of age they are at now they will need regular care and attention and running costs will be high.

The ST220 is different, much more confortable and obviously practical, but wouldn't be as fun. The Clio should be cheaper to run than the evo and fiat coupe, but obviously a totally different type of car...!

Long story short, had a 2.3 v5 seat for the last 4 years, starting to cost lots to keep going so we got rid of it and the wife got a chelsie tractor and I inherited the 2.0 zetec focus from her

I'd outgrown the v5 so the focus is realy dull

Looking for something to have some fun in. I commute 18 miles a day so economy is not an issue. We have the tiguan for practicality so I just want something to put a smile on my face

Got to keep the wife happy tho and she sees all old cars as rubbish. I don't want the earache of "there was nothing wrong with the focus and now your cars always in the garage!"

I'm not rushing into this!

Oh I should have added,

My fun driving if you like is country roads in Cumbria where my parents live a689 Penrith - Alston road as an example.

I'd consider taking up track days in a suitable car but not nececerily yet.

I've often wondered what sort of person buys early evo's. I've narrowed it down to the following:

1.) A true fundamental Evo enthusiast.
2.) Someone wanting a cheap Evo that isn't afraid of a spanner
3.) Someone who would rather spend money making the car something special than buying a newer car.
4.) A chav who doesn't know what he is getting himself into.

Coolamasta is probably 1-3 - which are you?

I need a 5th one

Someone naive who wants a quick motor and saw 4.4 to 60 so decided to ask questions!

Honestly don't think the wife would be impressed with an old evo
