Lovefilm likely to stream to PS3/Wii

A newly signed deal between Lovefilm and streaming technology provider Widevine will enable the European film rental service to offer movies on demand via game consoles and other devices.

As spotted by TechCrunch, the agreement makes US-based Widevine Lovefilm’s “preferred provider of digital rights management and video optimisation solutions”, allowing the movie firm to make its digital content “playable on many new devices”.

A PR rep for Widevine told us that the company serves video content on PS3 and Wii and that “both are near term roadmaps” for Lovefilm. “In addition to Wii and PS3 on the near term roadmap for Widevine to enable for Lovefilm are iPad, Mac, PC, Andriod, Humax STB and SharpTV,” the spokesperson said.

Interesting news.

They need to sort out decent quality streaming though. Tried a couple of the filmes over their website and quality was pitiful.

No that I really need this, as got an HTPC.
 
IDK exactly. Perhaps, you stream it as you play and then once the rental has finished the game requires you to either rent it again or you have the option to buy the game and it unlocks.

I hadn't thought about it that much :p

Think they might of improved it, watch a fair few free ones as part of my package and the last one Lord of war was very good indeed. no sign of blotchiness at any point.
 
Their streaming service to my Sony Blu-ray is actually quite good its just a shame that the line up is quite poor - especially because they must save money on streaming compared to sending an actual DVD.

HD is apparently coming soon too.

I watched lord of war last night, so don't know if they have changed something, or if they just using some sort of new compression on new films. I don't know. I see full metal jacket has just gone on the free list, so will probably check that out tonight, see if that is also good.

It was a comment from someone at Lovefilm in a review I read of the Sony Bravia Lovefilm streaming service a month or two ago - it just basically said 'coming soon' though.
 
Netflix is coming to the UK this year I think. Just the streaming service, not the actual disk rental service like Lovefilm.

If they do HD streaming like in the US, then I probably would sign up to it if the price is right.
 
I viewed some hd content from the bbc iplayer via a humax hd freeview unit. I used net plugs to connect it to the router with a speedtest d/l @ 4.5mb/s.

The quality was the best i've had on a 40" screen (near perfect HD), if it was all like that it would be great.
 
Agreed, the quality is awful - worse than a dvd and horribly pixelated on larger screens. They really need to up their bit rates if streaming movies is going to be the future for home cinema.
