Jacqui Smith applies for top BBC job: £77k a year for just 2½ days a week... and all the expenses former minister can claimBy Glen Owen

Former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has sparked fury by bidding for a top BBC job less than three months after her political career ended in disgrace.
The ex-cabinet minister, who famously charged taxpayers for the cost of watching two pornographic films, is lobbying to become vice-chairman of the BBC Trust.

The plum position pays £77,000 a year for a two-and-a-half-day week and also offers generous perks.

Ms Smith is hoping to replace the current vice-chairman, Chitra Bharucha, who is stepping down at the end of October.

Disguisting, however this maybe a blessing in disguise as it might encourage people to stop paying there tv license and get rid of the awful state propaganda machine.

Wow she accidentally put £20 on her expenses for some porno and gets slated this much? Give her a break..... How many Business Execs put this on expenses for "Extras" in their hotel room?

For the reocrd she frauded the taxpayer out of £116k.

If you really think about it, 20 quid was fantastic value for money and I don't mean the quality of the bongo films that her husband clicked for.

20 quid was the grand sum of the downfall and resignation of arguably the worst and most out of touch Home Secretary in memory with scant regard for civil liberties.

Couple that with her getting the boot from a disgruntled electorate at the last election and you have win win.

She also claimed over £116,000 for using her “sister’s” home as her main residence.

Once she lost her seat I didn't care about the rest of the election as I knew the British people had already won.

Looks like she may getting the last laugh and at our expense. Well not my expense because I refuse to pay for the BBC TV License.

I couldnt care less about the porno flicks. In fact I would pay her husband £20 a month just so he wouldnt have to go near that woman. People hate her because she is a massive retard who has had anything but a glittering career yet has managed to maintain and progress her status within the government for years. She deserves to be taken to the barn and shown a sort of kindness. Horrible horrible woman.

Not a fan then ?

Jacqui Smith aside...

No other comments on the fact that the BBC Trust, a body setup to represent the license fee payer employs a person in a very highly regarded position to do just two and a half days work, for a considerable sum of money, while no doubt also having another equally high paid job elsewhere.

Does the person doing two and a half days work a week represent good value to the license fee payer?

Except the TV license doesn't just pay for the BBC, a proportion goes to other terrestrial free to air channels, while I'm sure it's a very noble stand you are taking in not paying the license fee it isn't just the BBC that you are affecting.

£77k p/a isn't bad for a couple of days honest work a week, I suspect I'm in the wrong line of work.

It's all about the type of person you wish to attract. I would imagine such a post is likely to be aimed at intelligent, succesful and well balanced older people. People at this level of society generally have a number of different interests, may have retired from a previous top level full time job, and would be unwilling or unable to work 37.5 hours a week.

This is how almost all non-executive director positions work, for example.

Whilst I'm sure we'd all love to get £77k for 2.5 days work, if we work really hard for 40 years of our lives and get to the top of large and complex organisations*, we too can apply for jobs like this.

* I'm not including Ms Smith in this.

Why is it the British way to **** things off that we simply do not understand?
